Yeah I'm very curious as well. I've been talking with Greg Hanson, the senior hydrologist at WFO BTV, because we are going to try and do liquid measurements next year off our snow boards... but for this spring he's trying to get us an Adirondack Snow Sampler so we can give him some liquid equivalents at our snow study areas. He said they gave all there's out UVM and Lyndon State geography/met students so they can do an analysis for a school project. I've seen some of those kids out on Mansfield so I'm hoping to get my hands on their data.

Next season we are going to do a bi-weekly snowpack assessment for BTV but I'd like to try it out this spring just because we have such a solid snowpack (ranging from 40" to 90", bottom to top) that has got to have a lot of liquid in it.

Hopefully all of this releases slowly because even the lowlands io the Champlain Valley have over 30" on the ground.

This would be awesome. I'd love to get a more detailed snow analysis going next year. Anything I or my skiing friends (who you know) can do let us know. As you are aware...we're everyhwere....(insert evil laugh).

It's gonna be interesting when all this deep snow starts to let go over the next month. Lots of water locked up.

I've been thinking of doing a core to see what the snow/water equivelent is here--maybe 6" or more...?

I'll take the over...

After the Feb thundersnow, I had 4.7" LE in 23" snowpack. Since then I've had nearly 3" frozen precip (about .5" is ZR) and about an inch of plain old rain, but with surprisingly little signs of runoff. I'm guessing that my 22" - significantly less than your depth - has around 7" water. I could've sampled it Monday morning like cocorahs wants (my earlier sample was taken on Sunday aft, when I had time to do it and melt it), but I was more interested in getting out of my driveway and down the sleet-over-mud gravel road. That 2" sleet/ZR layer is armorplate now and all but impossible to core. Maybe if it softens enough Friday?

Given that snowdepths over 12-14" require multiple cores, which must then be emptied into a separate container, I do the melting by adding a known quantity of hot tapwater, which can then be deducted from the total. Much the quickest method for an accurate reading.

Thanks for all the great pictures Scott, absolutely agree about the day. Started off clear and cold with single digits, and went right into clear and warm at around 30 F. I was up skiing with Dylan at Stowe yesterday and it was a great one to be out.

BTV has their storm total summary out, and I hadn't seen it posted yet so I've added it below. The highest listing on there for snowfall is 3 SW Jay at 34.0", and for snowpack it’s Mt Mansfield at 90.0” of course, but there is also Jay Peak at 78.0”, then 4 N Walden at 49.0”. In our neck of the woods in Washington County we’re 3 NW Waterbury, and it looks like there were several Waterbury sites right in that 2-foot accumulation range like us. It is interesting to note that the other two Waterbury sites listed in the snowpack section of the table, which are both NE of town, had notably lower values for snowpack. Those spots would be much more removed from the spine, so I’m sure our location gets a lot more upslope snow, but as we discussed earlier in one of the threads, that doesn’t really amount to much in terms of snowpack building. The discrepancy certainly wasn’t from this synoptic event with those sites receiving 22.2” and 24.2” of snow, so it must have been in the past with another event or it could have been during consolidation during one of the warm spells.

Winter is pretty much rolling to a close in non elevated areas. Snowpack at my school is definitely taking a huge hit with these rainstorms and my house is just plain nasty and disgusting right now in terms of just dirty street and no snow.

Just about time to put a fork in it down this way unless like you said you live in elevated areas, We will be taking another hit this week..

From ineedsnow's post...do you know what area/towns this is referring to?

"eastern townships at 1800 feet is the real gods country"

Is this in the U.S., near Derby VT? Or, further east? Or, in Canada?

Thanks in advance. :)

I'm in awe of the incredible snow depths in the NEK this winter...good stuff.

well we should get 4-8 inches here tonight and tomorow before the rain. i'll probably surpass my seasonal peak of a rather meh 25 inches depth early tomorrow morning......i have 21 currently.

I just saw that BTV has winter weather advisories up for the coming event. They're suggesting 2 to 4 inches of snow, then some mix/frozen stuff, just like Powderfreak said he was thinking in the "Turn out the lights" thread.

The Eastern Townships basically cover the area due north of the VT, NH and western most ME section of the border between the US and Quebec .

Just about time to put a fork in it down this way unless like you said you live in elevated areas, We will be taking another hit this week..

Hope not - the March (and April, though not much can be expected there) disappointments are getting old.

March, last three years:

2008: Mediocre. Anticlimax to a great winter

2009: Bad. Winter absolutely dead 3/3 on.

2010: Historically awful, but winter had been a rotting corpse for some time already.

2011? Right now, looking at the 16-day guesswork, I'm thinking 2009-like, but with a different date of decease.

However, March at my current location has been pretty much feast or famine..

1999: Great. Though mild, had 32" with two 14" storms

2000: Poor, like rest of that winter.

2001: Wow!! Storms of 19", 16", 9.5", 7", 4". 48" OG on 3/31. Hit -25, too.

2002: See 2000.

2003: Fair. Cold and dry, like rest of winter.

2004: About like 2009.

2005: Great, 31" and cold, though the snow machine died after 3/13.

2006: Would be "historically awful" but 2010 took that title.

2007: Good. Cold and nice 8" storms 2nd, 17th. (Then 37" in April)

Yeah, probably more than 6". I was being conservative. ;)

I'll know when I get home and it's all melted down. I just took my 8" diameter standard rain gauge and shoved it down through the snow till I hit bottom and pulled it out. Surprisingly, the snow stayed nice and packed in the cylinder (30" tall or so) and I actually reached down far enough where I saw blades of grass. I left the cylinder inside, packed with snow and with a top on it to reduce evaporation. I've never actually done a core this way and it likely isn't very scientific but it might give me a rough idea of the water content.

Winter Weather Advisory in effect... BTV calling for 2-4" like J.Spin said, however my point and click would imply up to 5" is possible haha.

Point and click for the ski resort on Mansfield looks very interesting over the next few days...3-6" of snow, followed by rain (although the precipitation amounts show .1-.25" and then less than .1" so BTV implies not much rain)... along with strong, and damaging winds:

Tonight: Snow, mainly after 1am. Low around 20. Wind chill values as low as -4. Very windy, with a south wind 35 to 40 mph increasing to between 50 and 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Thursday: Snow before 4pm, then sleet. High near 35. Wind chill values as low as -1. Strong and damaging winds, with a south wind between 55 and 60 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow and sleet accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Thursday Night: Rain and sleet, becoming all rain after 7pm. Low around 34. Strong and damaging winds, with a south wind between 60 and 70 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Friday: Rain, mainly before 4pm. High near 39. Strong and damaging winds, with a south wind 65 to 70 mph decreasing to between 55 and 60 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Had a nice ski tour this morning up & back down Gile Mountain in Norwich, VT. The skiing was excellent. The old snowpack is deep & firm under foot and there was a couple inches of powder on top to lighten & fluffen the whole affair. While we had no freezing rain at the house during the last event, not too far to the south and east of home, there was a fair bit of icing and the trees even now are pretty iced up above 700' or so. The summit of Gile is 1800' and there is a fire tower on the top.

Here are a few shots...

Some serious ice on the trees:

Looking up the tower:

With the telephoto, I was able to zoom in pretty well on Killington & Pico some 25-30 miles WSW from Gile Mountain:

Looking south to Mount Ascutney, a lone pine and lots of iced up hardwoods. As you can see, there was quite a lot of haze in the air:

It was a little trecherous climbing up & down the tower but I managed. ;)

Honestly, even if the snowpack takes a full 12" hit (or more) we could still have 2 feet on the ground after this event. I wandered around out back with the yardstick and that storm snow was dense and did not settle much... even after two sunny mid-March days (and a high of 35F today) there's still 36-37" of settled snow on the ground going into this next system. If we get 3" or so we'll probably hit 40" of snow depth again before the rain comes.

BTV’s updated graphics are up for the coming system, so I’ve added them below.

Like Scott said, the point forecasts for the mountains around here suggest a 3-5, 3-6-inch snowfall. Our point forecast in the valley suggests 2 to 3 inches of snow, which falls through tomorrow afternoon, then liquid precipitation in the Thursday night through Friday night period, then snow works back in for Saturday and Sunday.

It's gonna be interesting when all this deep snow starts to let go over the next month. Lots of water locked up.

I've been thinking of doing a core to see what the snow/water equivelent is here--maybe 6" or more...?

That would be great to have liquid analyses from the mountain Scott, the ones from the stake are nice, but based on the numbers we see for snowfall, it makes one curious if everything is being caught in their gauge.

I've been wanting to do a snowpack core, and a few weeks back Chuck McGill from CoCoRaHS sent us an email encouraging folks to do them. So with the recent comments and the current snowpack it seemed like a good time. Anyway, I did one this evening and the snowpack here contained 7.84 inches of liquid.

Light snow falling now but only a trace by the looks of things outside. 28F

Anyway, I did one this evening and the snowpack here contained 7.84 inches of liquid.

My core finally melted down (didn't do the add known quantity of warm water trick) and ended up with 8.9" SWE. Damn! Glad I don't live in a low-lying, flood-prone spot but I may have to fire up the sump pump in the cellar before the month is out.

And I do have a canoe. :flood:

A healthy start to this system this morning..

2.0" new at 800ft in town (snow depth 38.5") at 26F

3.1" new at 1,500ft (snow depth 45") at 25F

Groomers reporting a little over 4" at the summit last night.

Snowing steadily, probably 1"/hr. I'm thinking the yellow and oranges right over the Mansfield ridgeline are clutter, but it is snowing pretty hard with good dendrites.

Hey, that much already, eh? Pretty good. Not so over here. Guess the pricip stayed west (of here) overnight. The last system did that too--we had nothing at all last Saturday and yet I encountered a bit of rain in Jeffersonville, Cambridge, Smuggs, etc.

Just took a closer look but still haven't 'officially' measured yet--looks like a tenth or two so far.

20F and 2" new, snowing moderately. broke out the xc trail last night behind the house, pretty deep when 155cm poles are worthless, if you skied gently you could skim the top 12", but any pole pressure was useless, ever see a man moon walk forward thumbsupsmileyanim.gif, great for clearing canopy, getting limbs I could never reach without a pole saw
