Just finished shoveling. Here in S. Arlington we got about 6–8 inches. Everyone said you should shovel while the sleet was still coming down. I didn’t — and honestly, it wasn’t too bad. The bottom layer of snow was powdery but semi‑compacted. The top layer, though, was about 4 inches of really dense, compacted sleet. Sometimes I’d break off long sheets of it with the other side of the shovel. It was heavy, but if I had started shoveling midday, all I would’ve had tonight was that solid sleet layer. The early snow actually helped me move the top crust. If I had shoveled midday, would it have glazed over and needed one of those flat ice spades? I think so, but who knows. Anyway, that’s my experience — could be wrong.

1/24-1/25 Major Winter Storm - S. IL, IN, and OH
Torchageddon replied to A-L-E-K's topic in Lakes/Ohio Valley
I did not have this on my bingo card for today, really besotted. Most insane is the rates, may even have had higher rates than anything I've seen. The LES on radar does look different from the bands I normally get and Huron's belts get. Its very cold but there is more dynamics I'd like to learn about on W Lake Ontario. What station was the 19.5" record in '44 from? The MSN using YYZ and touting the record snowiest day from that but sounds like they smudged the narrative. The storm was a bust here, only a few cm if that but days ago 20cm was pegged, while Toronto got their diamond! -
Indeed...Weathernext is there. I assume I have the hobbyist level...CWG gave me gratis access upon retirement. I am sure it is just another path to disappointment!

Yes my snow has turned to big flakes and our yard is white. I live near Cedar Buff area. Dimes to Nickel size Snowing harder than anytime during the main storm.

Know plateau can sometimes dry things out on this side, but HUN radar seems to be "thickening up" in the lower atmospher

Hmm. I thought winter ended there in December? lol Congrats on a great event. -
Here we go

Todays storm was suppressed south at this point last week, this one is east not south which always has more question marks to me but def could end up a big hit.

Tons of sleet but no icing. Roads will be bad tomorrow

I never did the 6 hour thing but my settled depth is around 13” new. Storm seems to be wrapping up but it was a very solid event and I just finished shoveling my car. This isn’t the biggest storm I’ve ever lived through but it’s certainly one of the most brutal, considering the temps were in the single digits all day and only by midnight did it rise to 11°F.

Dude that's basically there lol

Unsurprisingly, some big hits in the GEFS. 6/30 pretty good. 1/30 meh. Rest say no thanks for us at least - some OBX winners. But big jump from previous runs. -
Dropped from 28 to 21 in 15 minutes

Didn't we get a late glancing blow from a Miller A after the first two blockbusters in the 2010-11 snow season? -
The slight double maxima over dc and the Delmarva makes me wonder if there are two main camps in the ensemble members

Wouldn't exactly call that the bullseye
