This is like people who meh 8" snow events because "they've gotten them before". Did the people of Moore, OK meh an EF-5 ripping through because "they've gotten one before".

Well, even when it is epic for @CoastalWx in Weymouth.  He gets two 20"+ storm last season, which he has not seen before, and still finds excuses to complain!  It's along the same lines as, "the fcst was for 3 ft and I only got 2!  WORST FCST EV-A!"

May have to be careful here…not sure. Once METAR took over in 1996 everything went to <= 12kft ceilometer observations. A few of the larger airports did augment higher levels in, but I’m not sure how consistent that has been. BOS has had a 25kft ceilometer for awhile now, and does consistently augment, but I’m not sure how the high level coverage compares to the pre ASOS days with manned SA obs. At least Fish was smart enough to use BOS.

@vortex95 would probably know more on that

Here’s CON. A big “drop off” in cloudiness in 1996 once the ceiling reporting stopped at 12kft.

It’s pretty stupid seeing obs reported as CLR/Fair when it’s totally overcast at 15kft.

So here is a list I compiled long ago listed typical and atypical remarks found on SA airport reports before ASOS and METAR was adapted.

98 was an all timer for most….that gave everybody up that way their fill…an ice storm like that will hold you over for a generation or two. Quebec was absolutely devastated.

Wasn’t 97-98 a Super Nino?

From what I've gleaned from here, ENSO since 1950 had 3 very strong Ninos - 82-83, 97-98 and 15-16.  That last was the least snowy of 28 winters here.

One of the oddest phenomenon in the 1998 storm occurred in the MWN area.  The mountain observations included their highest January temp during the storm (since beaten IIRC), and Gorham had mainly cold rain.  In between at 1500-2500 ft asl, trees were destroyed by ice.
Another weirdness was observed in West Gardner, where the telephone cable had a line of discrete icicles.  Falling trees and breaking poles caused the cable to twist, first pointing the vertical-formed 4-5" icicles toward about 8 o'clock, then after another inch formed, twisting it to about 10:30, producing a long parade of hockey-stick icicles pointing at the sky.

It’s been awesome . Just fire and warm. All realness . Nothing fake

If anything is fake…it’s that. Most everybody else has froze.   But, as I pointed out yesterday, there is nothing fake about any sensible weather. Including your hill top not frosting yet. It’s real. Just as everyone else’s freezes are real.
