Yes they can, but we have yet to see and epic E Coast snow winter overall w/ such strong El Nino.  I am talking the NEUS.  Mid-Atlantic one Miller A and they get double the normal snowfall!  The cold in  place prior to the Feb blockbuster was solid.  So it can happen, just don't expect a long persevere snowfall like @CoastalWx wants!

January it was in 2016….unless you’re talking ‘83? Ya that was February.

I’m not going to get angry….but there’s nothing fake about it.  Is it radiational? Absolutely.   But not fake.

When it snows only at elevation, is it fake snow?  I think we know the answer to that.  So when I see fake cold….gonna push back every time.  Such a stupid term…you guys should be ashamed of yourselves:axe:.

Trees, plants, animals and people don’t know the sensible difference if it’s 29 at the surface, and 36 at 1000ft.

Neither gardens in September nor car batteries in January believe the cold is fake.  And the transpirationally boosted dews feel tropical even when the open hilltops are more pleasant.  Citing "fake" as pejorative is a bit silly.

17° this morning, ice on the washtub 3/8" thick.  Time to swap it with the snow scoop for the under-porch spot.

Reading and waiting for SPC outlooks on big event days is like waiting for Christmas morning on Christmas Eve to open presents

Yeah, Not sure where this "fake" term comes from, But sitting in the woods this morning wasn't fake, 45/27°F presently.

Absolutely.  Such a ridiculous term.  Any sensible weather isn’t fake whatsoever.

Maybe we should tell the ones that get a tornado ripping through their neighborhood, that it’s fake cuz it was isolated, and everybody didn’t get it…and cuz after it hits, it clears up, so it’s fake?

Because if something doesn't happen on certian hills in CT, it hasn't happened at all.

This is like people who meh 8" snow events because "they've gotten them before". Did the people of Moore, OK meh an EF-5 ripping through because "they've gotten one before".

Absolutely true.

I know folks like to say, oh well it’s fake cuz it warms up 30-40 degrees by afternoon.  Ya, we get that. But the cold is real as real can be while it lasted.  It killed the growing season…that’s as real as it gets.

Many deserts in the world have incredible diurnal swings…110-120F during the day, to freezing or below at night. Is that fake too?

Just more proof the term is ASININE.

hmm 8" have become handed out like the free candy in the counter bowl at a car dealership in recent decades...  It's come to almost expect for every snow event - some familiarization and entitlement bias has probably set in, too.  Repeated exposure and novelty habituation naturally lowers the amazement of it and the meh'ing soon kicks in.

You're contrast/analogy doesn't really hold up well, then.  Not when EF5s are still hugely more rare by comparison.

One period in one month does not make a winter.  You'll see ppl just focus on those select periods they got right, when what matters is the overall avg for the entire winter!

"97-98 had a November winter event."

Ok....many Novs do, your point?

Dec 23, 1997 there was a surprise 1-2 footer in SNE.  A winter event.   Did that change anything in the mean for temp in the CONUS overall that winter?  No.  I had 42,6" that winter in Woburn.  That's 15" below avg.  I did have 6.4" in Nov which is above avg.  But again, slicing and ice down short periods is cherry-picking.

For Woburn, for the 4 very strong El Nino prior, one was close to avg snowfall (1982-83), and the other three below.  That does not make a "big" winter in the @CoastalWx context! :P

That is my point. Disruption or not many of them already have early snow events because of their climatology.

Personally, I think an Icestorm is due. Cannot tell when or where, but I think we are due.

As already noted, same idea with hurricanes.

Personal significant ice storms:
Jan 1953 NNJ:  1-1.5", every tall tree lost limbs or snapped completely, lost power for 6 days.
Dec 1970 NNJ:  0.7-0.8", took out some large branches, short power outage.
Dec 1983 Fort Kent:  Similar to 12/70.
Jan 1998 Gardiner:  1.5"+, possibly the widest area with heavy heavy damage, outage.  We lost power 4 days, phone 13 days.

Other than those, none even reaching 1/2" - nothing bigger than 1/4" since '98.

98 was an all timer for most….that gave everybody up that way their fill…an ice storm like that will hold you over for a generation or two. Quebec was absolutely devastated.

Wasn’t 97-98 a Super Nino?

Hilltops don’t do fake cold which is what this entire last few weeks has been. You know when it warms 30-45 degrees during the day it’s fake . We get cold on CAA. Cooler daytime highs as well in this fake stuff . You must be like Hunch is, in an elevated valley between hills

Its everywhere around here and not in a elevated valley.. maybe because the region is higher as a whole?
