46 / 44 cloudy - 30-35+ degrees chill down from yesterday.  20 hours of cool reverses Friday 60s if stays mostly cloudy and 70s if the sun returns.  Saturday a touch warmer but again depends on where the clouds/showers are. Easter looking a bit wetter now as the ridge moves out and front in.  Cooler week 4/ - 4/9 then warming as ridge returns east 4/10 - beyond.

1936: An F4 tornado cut a 15-mile path through Crisp County, GA. Hardest hit was the town of Cordele, where 276 homes were destroyed in a five block swath through the town. The storm was on a course that would have missed the center of town, but it made a left turn towards the end of its path. 23 people were killed and 500 injured. Total damage was $3 million dollars.
Oklahoma City's morning low temperature of 20° set the all-time coldest April temperature recorded in the city. This record was later tied on 4/13/1957.  Billings, MT fell to -5° which seta record low for April and is the only day the temperature has fallen below zero in April. Sheridan, WY fell to -14°. 1956: Hard to believe, but well documented. As a tornado passed through parts of Wilmette, Il, in the very early a.m., its barometric pressure reductions resulted in “rear windows of cars blown out” and “sealed beam headlights popped out of the receptacles.” (Ref. 1957: An F3 tornado tore through Dallas, TX. 10 people were killed and 216 were injured. Total damage was $1.5 million dollars. This tornado was among the most photographed and studied in history.  A spring storm dumped 17.3 inches of snow at Stapleton Airport in Denver, CO. Gusty winds over 30 mph created blizzard conditions which reduced visibilities to 1/8 mile at times. The 24-hour snowfall had been exceeded only twice in previous years and the 24-hour precipitation of 2.05 inches was the third heaviest in April.(Ref. Wilson Wx. History)

1970: Sea level pressure of 28.86 at BWI was the lowest in history in the month of April in Maryland. Philadelphia had a barometric pressure reading of 28.82 inches, the lowest April pressure on record. The old record was 28.91 inches set on April 2, 1970. (Ref. 1990 - Thunderstorms produced severe weather in North Carolina and Virginia during the afternoon and evening. Thunderstorms produced golf ball size hail, and spawned a tornado near Chester VA which caused half a million dollars damage. A storm system produced snow and gale force winds across northern Michigan, with 8.3 inches of snow reported at Marquette. Temperatures in the north central U.S. soared from morning lows in the 20s and 30s to afternoon highs in the 60s and 70s. 2005 - Heavy rainfall in the Northeast produced flooding in parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Severe flooding along the Delaware River forced the evacuation of 6,000 residents in New Jersey and over 5,700 in Pennsylvania during the weekend of the 2nd-3rd. Around 3,200 homes in New Jersey were damaged, while one fatality was reported in New York (Associated Press).

2006 - Tornadoes and hail as big as softballs ripped through eight Midwestern states, killing at least 27 people, injuring scores and destroying hundreds of homes. In Tennessee, tornadoes killed 23 people, including an infant and a family of four. Severe thunderstorms, many producing tornadoes, also struck parts of Iowa, Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. Strong wind was blamed or at least three deaths in Missouri. The weather service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said it had preliminary reports of 63 tornadoes. The worst damage occurred throughout the Tennessee Valley.

2006: Central Mississippi Valley/Ohio Valley: Widespread severe weather produces a major tornado outbreak As many as 86 tornadoes are reported across Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee. 2015 - Late night severe storms produced 80 to 100 mph straight-line winds that caused extensive damage from Hutchinson to Newton and Wichita. An 89 mph wind gust was reported at the Kansas Aviation Museum located in southeast Wichita. (NWS, Wichita, KS)

Using July data from non–Death Valley stations during 1923–2024, we compute a range of temperature lapse rates diagnosed from the differences between Greenland Ranch station and the average of higher-elevation stations’ maximum temperatures (T_MAX) and elevation. The first 2 weeks of July 1913 are shown to be spuriously hot and other years at Greenland Ranch exhibit anomalous July temperature behavior as well. Despite the establishment of a U.S. Weather Bureau instrumented shelter at Greenland Ranch in 1911, based upon historical accounts, we believe some of the shelter readings in the early years were replaced with hotter values, possibly taken from the veranda of the ranch house using a thermometer of unknown provenance. didn't they change the location though?  philly runs very high all the time.  rainshadow (Tony Gigi) who used to post here years ago and worked for mt holly for years still makes fun of their temps.  I'll take a real met over the wannabe's in here any day.

The Summer of 2012 which followed was the 3rd warmest on record for the CONUS.

Do we then cool down after that warmup late next week, as has been the pattern?  Or do we get sustained warmth finally?  Have to wait until early next week to see what ensembles show IMO.  Takes some time to kick BDCF season around here.

The last time they changed location was late 1930s/early 1940s, I think. Before that, it was in Center City.

The EURO shows sustained warmth coast-to-coast (see @bluewave's post in page 2). We've been in that pattern since early March.

Water temps to our north east, especially in Atlantic Canada are extremely cold after a very cold winter up there. So the cold wants to bleed south west. We need a big ridge to overpower the cold bleed. Once that happens it’s game on.

First spring season for you in the northeast? 

This is the normal spring weather north of DC...warm shots across the bow to let us know summer is coming, but months of back and forth before sustained warmth, which some years doesn't come until early June. Anyone expecting sustained warmth before June needs to head south of DC

By June it will be hot enough but costal sections during April and May have to deal with the cold waters and marine air.That's why the best months for pleasant weather is mid September to mid November.Here is Central PA it is beautiful in the Spring. No water within 150 miles!!!
