Moderate sleet and freezing rain currently with the "last batch" coming through, sitting at 30 degrees.  Here, as in most parts of NE Metro  and further N in GA, we did have light freezing rain accruals earlier, you can almost see the ice growth on the trees and other objects, still hoping for the best at this point.

This has been a strange and crazy storm, none of the models got it right, they each had their little parts but in the grand scheme of things it just shows the weather will do whatever it wants, and never underestimate the CAD.

Safety for all and a huge thank you to all first responders and utility workers!

Incredible how different it is in the Atlanta metro, even by tens of miles.  I’m about 10-15 minutes south of Gainesville near Buford and it’s been pouring sleet for the last 15 minutes.  Zero rain.

Wow. What’s your temperature?

i really don't understand everyone is calling this a bust and a missed forecast. are you guys crazy?

the models did an incredible job in mississippi, tennessee, and alabama nailing temp profiles and they seem to be doing the same in georgia... with near perfect placement and strength of the wedge. atlanta has been on the border of an ice storm for 4+ days and that's exactly how it is playing out.

about the only thing is some of the models overdid the Frz Rn and underdid the sleet... at least on the first batch of precip that came through most of the mid south as sleet. However, the second big batch *has* been a lot of freezing rain, as forecasted.

lol at people in NC throwing in the towel and calling it a bust before 75% of the precip arrives.

That’s encouraging for us upstate folks!

The precip just arrived. Currently it’s freezing rain and 27.  From the sleet reports west of here in the heavier bands I would guess it would be sleet here. I can’t see .5” days ice here at this point

Currently 18 degrees in my town east of Charlotte    I assume whatever arrives later this afternoon will freeze instantly    Hourly forecast says  I don't get above 23 degrees today    Should be interesting!!

I think some of us old timers here in NC saw the writing on the wall last night - light precip. Dry slot, final “band” likely to underperform.  I think it’s a bust for those that didn’t factor in the dry slot and lower qpf.  The cold air and CAD was simply a matter of sleet vs ZR and we all know how that often shakes out with anonymously cold air.  Hat off to the NAM on the dry slot.  As for the cold and ptypes, seasoned Mets should have know.

FWIW. I was just looking at the future radar. It looks like the line of precipitation will hit here starting about 3:30. It also looks like the heavy rain is breaking up when it arrives. Could those storms in southern Georgia take some of the energy and moisture away from NE Georgia and Upstate SC?

I’m thinking it will be mostly sleet…at least hoping so. If it is a heavy line of freezing rain, it could be difficult to build up on the trees and lines. But just guesses

Banter I know but one day I want to love where there is no threat of a dry slot.

Check out the moisture transport that will be concentrated in that band, off the charts!

I’m too tired to look backward, but that seems awful intense round southside va. How does that stack up to Michael inn2018?

That’s what I would think too, however CJ not mentioning that at all.

Greg Fishel's latest thoughts for the Triangle.

At this point, it's hard to imagine a way that we will have a crippling ice storm. The big surprise with this event is the lack of precipitation, especially in light of what even the ensembles were showing just a couple of days ago. There will be one more burst late this afternoon and this evening, and there will likely be some ice buildup on trees and power lines. But will it be enough to make the lights go out everywhere? I don't think so. Obviously I will watch this very carefully until the last drop falls late this evening, but for now, the worst case scenario appears to have passed us by. Stay tuned!
