Blacksburg Coach
2 hours ago, BooneWX said: As someone in the industry, it’s not for no reason. Thank energy policy this past decade which pre maturely rushed the closure of coal fired power plants. You can’t replace that capacity overnight, it takes significant investment, much more than any company can possibly shell out without passing on. Luckily, electricity is still the best bang for your buck. It fuels almost every aspect of your life daily, for roughly the cost of a value meal. It's a monopoly on public infrastructure. They control waterways, politicians and make money hand over first. There is nothing safer than an investment in utilities and their dividends.Power companies often charge too much because most customers have little to no choice in who provides their electricity, giving these companies monopoly power with limited competition. Rates continue to rise faster than wages, even though service reliability and customer support do not always improve at the same rate. At the same time, power companies frequently report strong profits and high executive pay. The lack of transparency in how rates are set ? If you were on the up and up you wouldn't need to hide charges like a credit card company. Not a knock on you, I have several friends who are linemen and I appreciate them, these companies are a business and legally their CEOs are required to make these companies as profitable as they can and profitability always trumps affordability for families. Sorry guys, I know this is a storm thread. I'll make this my last post on the issue. 3

Especially with the cold air expected after? Think they can realistically get places back online fairly quickly? Not sure, but usually when there is an event like this or hurricanes, etc. you get a lot of help from linemen from out of state. In this case, a lot of them will be busy in their own areas I’d suspect.

gman
I am back to being stressed about this storm. After looking at all of the moisture to our west and watching the temps dropping quickly, Chris Justus might just be right. It looks bad for the Upstate. Hope I am wrong. Snowncanes
Just another observation: lots of reports of precip with not much in the way of radar returns. Just a reminder that with a wedge airmass (especially a shallow one) we can get light precip thats not necessarily showing up on radar. In turn that means models dont resolve this well.

Based on everything I've seen... Current observations, models which have been handling this storm well, cold air digging in, I believe he is. As I've said... From a risk management perspective, this is a pull out all the stops situation. Even if it ultimately turns out to be wrong
