Winter cancelled/uncancelled banter 25/26

I was taking a look at the Southeastern States board since they are being impacted by the snow today. The ups, the downs, the worry about whether it's going to materialize, other people responding relax, etc.  It's like observing a parallel universe. And just like people might say on here to coastal folks like myself when we don't jackpot, I'm thinking "you live in coastal South Carolina!  Why would you expect a lot of snow?"

Definitely starting to adjust to these temps, today actually feels mild to me at 25f and I’m out in a lighter jacket than previously. You really do begin to acclimate rather quickly, but then again our home is set to 68 so it’s not overly warm inside where it destroys that. My parents house is on like 78 .

Definitely noting a bit more melt today than previously as well, not a lot but some. I believe in glaciology  -10c / 14f is supposed to be the temp where sublimation stops even in sunlight and glaciers can accrue mass much more easily, but I’m not sure how much that translates to our snowpacks - I’m a little rusty on the physics :P. Still, it’s interesting noting how much melt occurs while wholly below freezing, and when it more or less slows to a stop. Almost nothing melted yesterday for example, very very little.

According to my lawn snow stick, I’ve lost about 1.5 inches of pack since the storm (and why even a small refresher tomorrow would’ve been nice).

32 is going to feel absolutely balmy next week

Gulf-effect rain showers at Key West with surface temps in the low 50s.  Water temps around 70 (20/21c) and 850s there are slightly below 0.  That's about as close to snowing as EYW is ever going to get.

I noticed the Wilmington NC area was dry slotting yesterday.  Oh, the pain...

There were some places that got hammered and large screw zones in NC.  Not saying we behave any better, but we've had more practice at dealing with these situations.

I don't like this look on the roof.  I've seen it not end well in the past.

I was able to clear some of my snow, the ice underneath is semi permanent at this point but at least with the snow gone the daytime sun should help.

But yeah fully expecting the telltale signs of water in my ceilings shortly.

Some people use a heated length of tubing that trickles water out. Of course, it needs to go in before the ice jam.

One thing that does help is to open the area where it drains down into the downspout/leader, at least what later melts can trickle away.  I melt the area by pouring warm water until it's open. You need to be able to get to the spot though. I have one spot where I do this on the north side of my home.

Punxsatawney Phil issued the following press release:

AS THE TEMPERATURE INSIDE MY BURROW IS 62 DEGREES F AND OUTSIDE IT IS ABOUT -200 WIND CHILL, I WILL POLITELY DECLINE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PREDICT YOUR WEATHER AND IN ANY CASE, ACCORDING TO JOE BASTARDI WHERE I GET MY FORECAST, IT WILL REMAIN WINTRY COLD FOR SIX WEEKS. DON’T SHOOT THE MESSENGER.

It's a bitch to disappear those water stains from the ceiling.  The slow meltout in the sun with below freezing temps is the worst, otherwise the ice dam melts too

I also have an ice dam. The roof melt tablets didn’t really help. If you have ice water shield under the shingles you should be ok

I have a 30 year old roof that's about to be replaced.  I probably should have done it already.  There will be ice shield with the new roof.

Our first house was in West Babylon (back when a couple of kids could afford to buy a house) and the first time I ever saw water inside from a roof ice dam was in that house in February of 1994.  I went up on the roof and shoveled the snow off it.  This roof is much more difficult to access (and higher), plus I'm 30 years older now and my wife is very much against me going up there.  We'll see; she's a wuss, but I think she will prevail this time.
