Friday, April 1st, 2016 convective threat

A strong cold front will be approaching the region during the day on Friday and out ahead of the cold front computer forecast models are generating some modest instability along with the potential for some fairly steep mid-level lapse rates (>6.5 C/KM).  Wind shear is also forecasted to be quite strong as well.  If enough instability materializes we could see a low-topped line of thunderstorms (and maybe even not all that low topped) capable of producing strong winds and perhaps even some hail as well.  Wouldn't be surprised to see a few strong to marginally severe storms either if steeper lapse rates can work in and instability ends up being slightly higher.

I applaud your enthusiasm  ... but (for all thread starters) can we stop using the word "threat" for everything and anything that is remotely postable?

seriously ... "there's a threat for passing sprinkles today"

How about just saying, there is a 'possibility for convective activity on April 1', or perfectly sensible terminology of that ilk and leave it at that? and should the day arrive with an stepped up urgency, THEN we say conditions have become threatening -

Really, threat should be reserved for clear and present upper tier threats; as the word implies, possibly injurious to property and person.

Another annoying usage:  'threat for 1-3 " of snow tomorrow'   please...no

Having "aired" that pet peeve ... yeah, could almost see a grapple and rains hail mixture ending as parachutes and rapidly falling temperatures along the arctic boundary, too.

Marginal risk, with possibility of upgrade mentioned, MD out, deserves a thread, definitely. Also, while I am not keen to see any real damage (in Tolland or anywhere else), I don't see what's wrong with "threat" in the title, it seems to fit, as a common colloquialism for anything negative in the near future. Of course, here we tend to like severe weather, most of us, so maybe not appropriate after all...
