Ottawa Blizzard
I thought we were all forecasters. Anyway, just wondering as I don't have access to much local info, what is the current state of play for the Ohio River, cuz the temps by mid-week look cold enough to freeze just about anything other than maybe the atmosphere itself. All I remember, rather vaguely, is some sort of energy crisis in Jan 1977 when the Ohio River froze over. Roger, do you think Environment Canada is underdone with their forecast temperatures for Toronto early next week? They're calling for a high of minus 11 Celsius on Tuesday. I know we talk often during emergency training about earthquakes and it disrupting the flow of natural gas from a ruptures pipeline to whole states. Roger Smith
Roger, do you think Environment Canada is underdone with their forecast temperatures for Toronto early next week? They're calling for a high of minus 11 Celsius on Tuesday. Would go a bit lower myself, -15 C YYZ to -13 C downtown. Maybe they figure on a bit of heat transport from Lake Huron. Chicago WX
It's wrong with the Sunday clipper for here, and probably far too cold for so long...but a pretty weenie run, talking specifically cold, for LAF on the 0z GFS. All I remember, rather vaguely, is some sort of energy crisis in Jan 1977 when the Ohio River froze over. Ohio River here in Cincinnati doesn't even have any ice along it as of the moment. River is flowing along at what looks to be a significantly quicker than normal clip --- I know that it's more likely to freeze with lower than average flows. It's certainly been cold here over the last couple days (and all month): down near -10 yesterday morning, right around 0 right now.

Ottawa Blizzard
My mean temperature for the month is now in the upper teens. Looking to see if I can surpass 2009, maybe even 2004. All depends on how cold it gets early next week in these parts. Might end up with a mean temperature close to that of January 1978, which is interesting given that this December's mean was almost identical to that of December 1977. Chinook
Tuesday morning looking the worst of the cold next week. -35F to -40F wind chills again for the Ohio Valley region. (Tuesday 12z) The reality is, the wind gusts are usually a bit higher than the 2m winds predicted by models, so values below -40 may be possible

Chicago WX
Been a slow creep upwards for LAF today. Up to 2º at 2:00pm. Though, we did get midnight high'ed (6º). -5º was the low temp.

RCNYILWX
Nasty, nasty. Bit of a break late next week. Considering that's an 850 anomaly plot, the -1 to -3c it shows over northern IL is probably still at least - 10c and still cold, but I guess that will feel balmy compared to what we'll see before that. I hope the -PNA pattern gets us into a regime of normal cold and snow. This extreme cold is getting old.
