michsnowfreak
Took a pic of sunrise this morning. Maxed out at 56 today, missed record by 4F and today was enough to soar Detroit from a monthly mean of 30.2F yesterday (which would miss the top 20 warmest January list by 0.1F) to a final monthly mean of 30.7F, good for 17th warmest January on record (following the 12th warmest December on record). Precipitation was 3.00", above normal but not in the top 20 wettest Januarys, and snowfall finished at 9.3" which was just a few inches below normal. My backyard saw 10.9" of snowfall in Jan. Only 10 of the 31 days saw a snow depth of 1"+.

Snowstorms
50 mother****ing degrees here and goddamn birds are chirping. This was my world 8 hours ago: This winter is an abomination. Nice pic. F**k this Winter isnt happening. Its already February and the sun angle is getting higher each day. I cant believe it was f**king 50 degrees today, just amazing. Only nine days had highs below freezing, the rest above freezing, just amazing. At this point 2006-07 and 2001-02 were better and even 2009-10. I f**king lost the bet, how sad. Getting 31.5" is going to be difficult. In a way I'm still winning that bet I just hope she doesnt make me do it for a "long" time haha. Bring on spring, f**k this. In terms of snowfall, we were not better off in 2006-07 to this point. And same goes for 2001-02 up until yesterday. Then we got that quick hitting snow storm 10 years ago today. Either way if we dont get a snowstorm by Valentine's day then I will say 2006-07 is better than this year haha. Feb 07 was much below normal temp wise. Spring is almost here. Its almost midnight and its still f**king 50F when we really should be at 14F, pathetic.

People always overexaggerate in weather/winters like this, but like it or not, in many ways its basically just the middle of winter. Yes, its 2/3 of the way through meteorological winter, but feb 4th is the halfway mark of astronomical winter, and snow-wise we are JUST past the halfway mark, at least here, for climo snowfall. 2006-07 was way warmer than 2011-12 up to mid-January, then Feb went into the deepfreeze. This far north for gods sake you can be in the deepfreeze in late March into April, theres no telling what is to come. YES its possible things dont improve but if you want to go with odds, they probably will at some point. And i know Toronto has suffered more than most here in recent winters, so it seems like all hope is lost. But its not. fwiw the record highs for many today were set in 1989, a massive torch. Feb 1989 ended up being well below normal in temperature. So its not like these sickening temps are some sort of omen that this soft winter is already on the way out. Geos
6.18° above normal here compared to UGN's normal temperatures. 14.1" of snow this month was a drastic improvement over December. At least this month gave us a little winter. 2001-2002 was still the worst winter in terms of snowfall to this point then this year here. 14.4" vs. 16.0". January 2006 was still warmer than this January at +10.93°. This month produced more snowfall than Jan. 06 at 12.8".

cyclone77
The high of 59 at MLI today was very mild, but was still 10 degrees short of the record of 69 back in 1989.. The_Global_Warmer
St. Louis has been completely crapped on this time around. 3.8" of snow so far. Two minor events. At least one of them was during temps in the teens and 20s so it was a nice dry blowing snow. January leaves with a 26F+ anomaly day and 38.1F for the month tying 13th all time with 2002. January finishes 6.1F above normal and 8.5F above the 1971-2000 normals. December was 6.2F above normal and 11th warmest on record. November was 4.2F above normal and 13th warmest on record. So the cold season has been steadily warm, but not off the charts, so it's not a total wash at this point. February is going to start with 16-20F anomalies for 2-3 days then 10-15 for 2 days. Then a cool down towards 3-5F+ anomalies. Which this winter because of the lack of snow along the Rockies, models are to cold in the 5-8 day range here with these HP's. Either way, that will put us around 11-13F+ by the end of week one. With only 21 days to knock that off. I would be betting Feb will end up well above normal. I know the patterns have flipped, but it is just amazing how different one winter to the next can be around here.

We averaged a huge 7 degrees cooler than January 2006. I didn't have any snow until the 12th, but the next two weeks led to this being the 5th snowiest January since 1953. Signs of how pathetic Lake Effect snow is in warm weather: We've had about 40 inches so far this winter (mostly lake effect) and have pretty much no snow left (except in shade and big piles). Several inches of the stuff melted in a few hours earlier this week. No moisture to it whatsoever!
