January 31-February 2 Historic Winter Storm part 10

Has anyone heard from BowMe? Last I thought he was around was sometime last evening.. but haven't seen him post since then. I thought for sure he would've been on here posting pics and regaling in all the glory by now...

Effin power went out 30 mins after I finally got comfortable and was able to join you guys in the last thread so my night was done with you's.

Me and the wife cleaned our driveway off from 7am to 11.. Came in all soaking wet and half frozen and still no power. Then the plow came through to open the road for the 1st time as we were stripping down.. Got a new set of clothes on to go open up the bottom of the drive and we were very happily greeted to my buddies plow truck and he zipped through the 4' it seemed like disaster the plow left us. Then it was off to my parents to clean theirs off as my dad plows at the airport - he wont be home until friday night and he hasn't been home since monday morning when he left for work. For working this week he will be getting 3 weeks of comp time as he never takes the pay.. Lotta stressful work during the winter but in the end he'll now have 6 extra weeks of vacation on top of the 5 he gets... Nice.

Got done with the parents drive at 2.. Gave mom her birthday stuff, downed a few beers and lunch and I don't remember another thing until I woke up at 9pm Had a few slices of rum birthday cake and it was off to the shack where we were greeted to electricity

So here I am finally. On the bright side I have lots of reading and pictures I'm sure to catch up on

I was crabby as a baby teething during the first part of the storm as all it was doing was blowing my beautiful snowpack away and I think the wind was so strong it didn't drift efficiently.. I've had bigger drifts in run of the mill WSW's Then the winds laid down some for stretches a little but still stronger then our run of the mill gusty NE wind snow storms and things started to turn around and accumulating more like 1999. 1999 storm accumulated evenly a lot better but I don't remember it holding a candle to the power of this blizzard. In the end I couldn't be happier with this storm even tho did blow all of my original snowpack away in the wind tunnel and other areas that took so long to build..

Looking forward a lot to reading how everybody else did and all the pictures but that will have to wait until tomorrow morning.. Tonight I think I'll upload my pictures to Walgreens so I can cheat and not have to resize them.. Only problem with that is they will probably look even crappier.. O wells.

Can't leave out the MSP blizzard. That one was a monster from a wind/P-grad and snow perspective too.

We've had a much higher than normal frequency of these potent systems this year. I think we can thank some of that high-latitude blocking and La Nina for that.

Another monster somewhere before spring sets in certainly seems like a decent bet.

To deal with the sleet pack you need a square edged shovel and a pick. It's gonna take a long time and it's gonna kick your ass all the way from here to Sunday and back. Get soccer shoes with steel cleats or you're gonna mess up your back something terrible from fallin on your ass.

This whole post had me laughing on the floor.

How does your mom like her winter birthday? If I knew where to look for climate stats, I could verify this, but I would say over the last 26 years, there has been a winter storm (not just snowfall) the week before or after over 50% of my birthdays, and over 75% of the last 8 years I've lived in Indiana.

We ended up with about 15 inches here. The thundersnow was impressive but some of the heaviest snow of all came yesterday during the late morning through early afternoon. The flakes were huge and accumulated rapidly. This, along with 13 inches of snow on the ground prior to this storm, makes it look like the UP out there. Snow is piled everywhere.

Yeah, I may seriously sneak up there one of these weekends lol. Filion in Huron county reports a 33" snow depth!

DTX storm totals. I find it out that there is lesser amounts towards the far western edge of the forecast area, tho models did show as dry tongue east of BTL but west of ARB, maybe it verified. These totals DO NOT include the waa snow

South of 69... if it wasnt for the 2-3 hour sleet/dry slot add on 2-3" to those totals and btw Rochester did not get only 6.5" it was more like 9"

Indianapolis public schools remain closed for the 3rd day in a row today. Watching the news this morning and they have a reporter at one of the schools downtown...the entire parking lot/and all pavement surfaces are literally a skating rink. I mean really impressive.

And we are going to get just another sunshine today to melt off just enough of the ice to create a liquid glaze over everything again. It's a nightmare here. Never seen anything like it. The secondary roads are terrible. 3-4 inch ruts running down the middle of the roads. Barely drivable at 20 mph.

O wells.

What an ordeal, huh? Glad to hear you and the wife made out okay though. :)

Can't believe how bad it is down there. During the height of the storm, I think I had a few hours of heavy sleet which has made the snow pack (which is 16") pretty solid. Most roads here are passable now with the exception of some very rural areas. Was a great storm...

This is all sleet, no snow. Little piles of what they could get scraped off the roads everywhere!

Wound up with 21" in my back yard. It was pretty well sheltered from the wind and the drifting, so it was pretty uniform. Managed to get the driveway cleared, between my son, the g/f, her son, and our two younger kids. The kids younger (8 and 9) have never seen this much snow, so they loved it. Anyway, no power outages, just several power drops during the storm which made work difficult, but we are thankful we didn't suffer any power loss. The sun did help with shoveling as we were able to get down almost to the concrete.

Anyway, the schools closed, the high school rather reluctantly (they just broke a string of 40 years with no snow days) The schools closed for today (Thursday) as well, as many side streets are impassable still and much work has to be done. I am sure I am going to be spreading out the snow piles over the next few days, they are anywhere from 4 to 6 feet tall along the drive way.

What a storm.

I think, after this one, the folks I ran across who took this thing far too lightly have learned a new respect for the power of weather.....

I ended up measuring 19.5" and a spotter nearby measured 19.7". 2nd largest 24 hour snowfall in history (1st place only 0.7" away).

This was how it broke down:

2.1" WAA

11.2" Storm (Main)

6.2" LES/Deformation

Quite an amazing storm. Actually, the most amazing snowstorm I have ever lived through. The combination of wind and heavy snow was unbelievable. Living in a rural area almost exaggerated the effects of the storm. A full 24 hours after the snow stopped, and Jasper County is only one of three Indiana counties still under a state of emergency.

Although officially this would hardly even be a top 5 storm (LES is what really boosted our totals to reach the sky), I would consider it the 2nd largest storm in history. The combined effects of this baby was unbelievable.

Am I glad I came home? YES! If I would have missed this I might have cried.

Also, FWIW, only need 6.3" of snow the rest of the season to make it the snowiest winter on record (2007/2008 holds record with 55.6"). I think it is likely that we've had snowier winters than these "records", however, COOP is the only thing I can rely on for historical data. Therefore, I just go with what I've got. Anyways, this will end up a top 3 winter, no doubt.

After much deliberation at the office, we've decided that Moline's 1.7" from the lead wave and 16.7" from the main storm was in fact part of the same weather system. Especially in light of the fact that Moline never had a 6 hour period where it did not snow (trace from 06z-12z on Feb. 1). That makes this a record tying event total of 18.4" (previous record Jan. 11-13, 1979) in addition to breaking the 24 hour record with 16.7" (previous record 16.4" on Jan. 3, 1971). The 16.7" actually all fell in 18 hours. :weight_lift:

Took another drive around town today. Several roads are still snow covered and major roads like Route 59, Irving Park Rd and Bartlett Rd are down to one line with the second lane filled with snow up to 6 feet high.

District U-46, the second biggist district in the state, has closed school tomorrow which will be the third straight day.

Using DTX coop observers, I added the amounts from each morning obs to get each stations total snowfall for the Feb 1/2 storm, since sometimes PNS's may not include full amount. And yes, I include WAA.

State roads are fine here today but side streets and county roads are still slick as snot. Nothing like driving on glassy ice, even better now that it's gonna be covered by the shot of snow we might get tomorrow.
