Ended up with 4.5” on the picnic table. Not bad all things considered. That puts me a little bit over 11 inches for the month. -
4.5" here 10.5 l" for the season

Looks like another one at the end of the run as well. Just hoping they hold enough to track. -
Just measured about 5” here in Bayside. Definitely must have snowed a few inches last night. I guess that wasn’t a monumental bust; just on the low end of guidance. Looks to be a widespread 4-6 across NYC, north NJ, LI, coastal CT with 6-8” across west Chester.

Not exactly pertinent to our area, but if you pause the video below at 1:02 (or simply note the thumbnail), you get one of the biggest swings and misses in the history of 30 Day Temperature Outlooks. This forecast ran for the NYC area on 12/24/1993. God, I miss this era...- 131 replies

Wife said driveway is a sheet of ice but road crews did a decent job keeping things under control. -

You guys did real well considering the cut off. Ya, the ratios are superb for sure. Beautiful snow growth…even at 12:30 am when I finally gave up the fight lol, it was snowing light..but the growth was still excellent-dendrites from start to finish..with temps in the upper teens. This was a very good one here. Boxing Day strikes again. This was more intense and furious than the 2010 Boxing Day blizzard lol, that boned this area, and crushed NYC/Jersey. -
That is perfectly stated. You'd go to bed hearing the magical "3 to 6" being mentioned, sure you were looking at a snow day, only to throw open the curtains Night Before Christmas style, quickly assess the situation, and realize you were still looking at grass. There's your baseball on the lawn, clear as day. You could almost hear the sad trombone.

measured 3.5". not bad considering I was thinking 2" -
Did Newark update at 7 am? They were at 2.5" at 1 am, so I'd expect maybe 3" there.
-
La Guardia was at 4.1” as of 7AM. So, all NYC area official reports are now above 4”.

If we could not change the current depiction that'd be great. 6z gfs op has me getting like 15” in 6 hrs. The only problem is it’s hours 306-312. -
Agree but total qpf about 0.50 you’re not going to clear 6 with that

3.5 here at Lava lake in Dayville. Maybe someone can explain why the lake is freezing up now. Yesterday open water. Overnight 75% frozen. Is it because of the wind direction? I’ve clearly had plenty of below freezing nights and days, but it would not freeze. Last night made it start to happen though. The small cove areas have been frozen for a while, but I’m talking about the main, large body of water. -

@The 4 Seasons6.5" final. Pretty impressive considering it was really just 4 hours of precipitation. -
funny way to spell “unhinged lunatics” as “not us” .

My layman's take - In setups like this it's almost like trying to not only predict severe thunderstorms in July, but predict which towns are going to cash in. That was clear to me by the unusually frequent reference to banding in much of the forecasting. Compare to being under a "widespread thunderstorms" prediction. Some people get crushed, others get next to nothing. The difference is that in July most people - not us, but normal people - are just happy to have missed out, and they go about their day, rather than getting on the computer and writing blogs about it. This is a tough, imprecise business - I give the mets a lot of credit.

These are the d10-15 maps, 5 day maps. The transition to this occurs much earlier. If those western Atlantic heights back into the Davis Straits and hook into the EPO.

I might try throwing some salt to at least try to penetrate it and turn it to slush before I try scraping it off.
