Occasional Thoughts on Climate Change
donsutherland1 replied to donsutherland1's topic in Climate Change
I suspect that human society will need to experience a crisis of a sufficiently large magnitude to break the inertia. Pandemics, wars, economic crises have all been able to shift the bias from inaction to action. But unless a crisis is sufficiently large to destabilize the business-as-usual paradigm and break faith in some future technological miracle that is used as an excuse for delay, it will be difficult to see significant progress. I don't believe a single weather event will suffice. One would likely see a degree of proactive reform on a local or regional scale, as opposed to the global scale required. Moreover, the response would likely be focused far more on adaptation than mitigation. After some passage of time, things would drift back toward business-as-usual. One sees a recent example in terms of growing financial system deregulation now that the 2008 financial crisis is fading from memory. I suspect the same thing would happen following a regional failed harvest, catastrophic flood, or lethal heat event. What might break the logjam would be recurring failed harvests on a large-scale, significant encroachment of rising seas into numerous major coastal cities, etc. Tragically, the human and social costs would be far higher under such circumstances than with any single event. -
The stream in our back woods is bone dry…not even a puddle or wet spot. I’ve never seen it like that. The ferns out there are brown. Most trees that are 10-20ft or smaller are wilting. The lawn crunches when walking on it. Hopefully we get a little tonight to moisten up the surface so it can all soak in Sat.

Texas 2025 Discussion/Observations
Powerball replied to Stx_Thunder's topic in Central/Western States
The models get far too aggressive with the mixing out of moisture through the column. In dry Summers such as 2022, 1980 and 2023, they're closer to right than wrong. But in years like this one, 2021 or 2015 where there aren't drought conditions ongoing, they tend to be way off. -
I know exactly where that is! Interestingly, one of my kiddos was just across the street from there about an hour ago. We just finished w/ our second line of storms here in Kingsport. Fortunately, we have been spared the really severe stuff. I did see some reports out of South Knoxville of half dollar size hail - but that is second hand information by me.

68 in Maytown with 0.23" of rain for the day. Much, much worse storm down here at work. One of the best of the season. Near zero visibility along with very strong winds.

Looks to be an active evening. Haywood NC-Swain NC- 407 PM EDT Thu Sep 4 2025 ...A STRONG THUNDERSTORM WILL IMPACT NORTHEASTERN SWAIN AND NORTHWESTERN HAYWOOD COUNTIES THROUGH 445 PM EDT... At 406 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 12 miles east of Gatlinburg, or 10 miles southwest of Big Creek in the Smoky Mountains, moving east at 30 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and nickel size hail.

I just a stoner but I think they are saying that if it rains it will be cool. If there's no rain and sunshine that temps will be hot due to the front itself not bringing in actual cooler air. It sounds like they still aren't sure what will happen so stay tuned. Go on a Jebwalk if it rains. The temps should be cooler if it rains.

.12” rain - really hope that line out west makes it but I have doubts. Good stuff to my E

Wow nice hit! That's more rain than I've had in seven weeks. Not a drop and I don't expect any rain here for a very long time yet - maybe by mid-Oct

DFW just recorded its 7th 100*F day of the season as of 3pm. Highs in the upper 90s are forecasted for tomorrow. And looking into the medium/long range, after another bout of below-normal temps this weekend, there's still plenty of Summer (90s) to come yet... -
Afternoon day 3 update from SPC mentions potential upgrade to SLGT risk depending on destabilization - currently MRGL risk

My area doesn't miss rain in summer 2025. Looks like a couple inches coming and more flooding. I was hoping for drought through September lol Looks like some training setting up for the lowlands. Possibly flash flood #6 incoming.

Good lord - actual pouring rain downtown Baltimore

Cracking thunder all around, but now I see blue sky to the west. Nary a drop. Oh well
