I knew this was a 10-20 inch storm based on 1.5 inches of precip and artic air.

Models be damned…sometimes you gotta use your guy

Who's your guy? Is he taking new clients?

I'm in Hyde Park about 10 miles or so from that reporting station and I absolutely believe those obs. Visibility was 1/4 mile or less nearly all day. I have about 15 inches in 13 hours so I would say I agree with those obs.

Ok could be legit. I might have been in a “dry slot” for most of the day. Would have assumed more than 13 inches staying all snow here but never had that real heavy snow burst all day. We always seem to be on the low end. Still amazing to see snow all day at 6 degrees, just wasn’t very exciting to watch here.

Ruining my snowcover so my dog can walk. She's large, old and has a leg issue.

Bro I spent a half hour digging out a crystal outhouse dog bathroom in the yard.  He was literally getting stuck in the snow.  Big dog too.

Yeah mine is 12 with a few acl constructions and various other issues. But when it snows she refuses to come inside and turns into a whiny brat if we drag her in.

Yep just how my gut said it wouldn't stay hours of sleet with temps in the teens and it would be more of a mix of snow/sleet. Usually if something is rare it doesn't happen, occasionally it does.

She has a torn acl and we can't repair it bc she'll blow the other one. It's been over a year. She limps and I can tell it hurts but she's on meds and is still relatively healthy.  She turns 13 in May.  She lovesss the snow.

Comical how off the surface temps have been. Weather app has been estimating based on models and has been almost ten degrees too high all day compared to reality

This cold surface air wasn’t being dislodged other than on the immediate NJ shore and maybe Montauk.

Latest HRRR shows that temps should start dropping now from west to east.

I question those 8 hours of heavy snow. I am about 5 miles east of there and never experienced heavy snow today Moderate yes. Have 13.2 inches despite staying all snow. Unless they were in a good snow band but 8 hours would be odd. Interesting.

I think you are onto something. Sometimes all that is required is the 0.25mi vis. When it's really cold and a little windy, the visibility is often that low. Doesn't mean the intensity of the snow is actually that high. I think the very cold temperatures today has a lot to do with all the heavy snow obs... unfortunately the obs are not well correlated to actual liquid/hr.

Best forecast for almost all NY Metro was 10" - 15", with frankly a gradual increase from S to N, no huge cutoff, as for those who stayed all snow looks as ratios came down some. Places in C NJ have 10" - 12", NYC 11", NE NJ 11" - 14", NW NJ 12" - 15"

this was a beast. i had to go out to dig the sister in law out; cars stuck all over, unplowed streets, sleeting like the devil out; the big snow blower froze and the tines would not turn; had to break out the old craftsman. my sil has a little electric toro and that little beast tore right through that sleet, which i'm saying had to be a foot or more. any zr on top of this will be a nightmare. it is still sleeting out ffs....never went back to snow.

NYC 10.6” on their last update. Should finish with over 11”.

Nam fail.

Did you fail to notice that sleet has been mixing in since about 2pm? For the 100th time, the NAM does not explicitly forecast snow. I don't know why this is so hard to understand.
