Nothing zoomed out. I was trying to figure out how to capture it on camera. 

Here's a video from when I was at Lake Flower. I had to look toward the sun to be able to see it.

I know lol, but I was clear across the lake. Way too far away. I don’t think my car exhaust was responsible either. Like you said before when talking about what to look for, it was like a very fine cloud over the lake and at home. You couldn’t see it on camera without zoom.

I’ll figure out how to appropriately document it someday but appreciate you being willing to take a look and ask questions.

Yeah it’s hard to say. It should be little tiny ice crystals filling the low levels that are almost suspended. The vid did look like snow crystals…a few looked pretty large. Was the whole layer full of them like fog or did you just see them in a certain area? You can definitely get flakes out of a chimney if it’s cold enough too. I’ve seen flakes falling out of light steam fog off the river here where it’s -10° or colder. You should be able to see halos and sundogs through the diamond dust too since it’s essentially a cirrus cloud at ground level.

When you see it for real the first time you know it. I’m not saying you didn’t experience true dd here, but I can’t exactly tell from the vid.

It looked like an extremely fine fog but it wasn’t particularly dense. Hmm…I mean I’ve seen us snow in virtually clear air conditions so idk. I’m new to all this so it’s pretty cool learning about what to spot.

I mean it could be IC. This is probably the best example I could find on YT with parhelia

Learn where the coldest rad spots in your area are and which ones are the quickest to fog out. You were on a lake so that’s probably a good spot. What was the temp there?

Car thermometer had -19. House was -20.

When we lived in Fort Kent, we saw the clear air sparkles several times.  Needed to be flat calm and -20 or colder.  There's a French term in the St. John Valley (perhaps other places, too) for the phenomenon that translates "the cold coming down".

Not noteworthy temperature this morning at Willard Beach in South Portland, but 2 degrees was enough to kick up some sea smoke.  The wind chill of -15 was unwelcome

WXW1 (East Hartford, CT) had a Hi/Lo of 15.0/3.2. Colder high than 2/4/23.

Depends on the age and the bird. The older girls start looking miserable in the low teens. The 3 year olds don’t seem to really care until it’s a bit below 0F.
