Newark just reported 9" and 7-10" are common all over CNJ/NNJ (my friend in Colts Neck got 9" of snow before the change). Even if we only get sleet from here on, the counties south of 78 in EPA/CNJ and then SW along 95 in SEPA/SNJ are still supposed to get heavy precip for a few more hours, so getting to my 10.1" prediction seems almost like a sure thing, give the very recent NWS update to the warning, linked below, which says we could get up to 4" more sleet/snow, plus 0.2" freezing rain on top (but that's not a given at all). RU848789 Posted January 25 Share Posted January 25 As of 3 pm, we got another 1/4" of sleet (1" so far, on top of our 8.3" of snow), so we're up to 9.3" of sleet/snow. Temp up to 17F now and pretty windy.We have another 0.7-0.8" of QPF (precip) to go as per the latest HRRR, that's 2-2.5" of sleet to go if all sleet (see the meso discussion below, which implies mostly/all sleet), but it also shows 0.1-0.2" QPF as freezing rain along 95 after 7 pm (assume that means sleet NW of 95 and rain SE of 95 during that time). Really don't want ZR, but since we might, I'm going to leave some sleet on my driveway/sidewalk to absorb any possible ZR rather than having an ice rink. The media has basically made it sound like the apocalypse. I think by mid morning tomorrow we are looking pretty much back to normal. Although parts of the region have transitioned to sleet, widespread snowfall amounts of 6" or above have occurred. The outcome is largely the result of the system's dynamics, as the warm air came in aloft as per the consensus of the guidance. From yesterday: Prior to the warming of the mid-levels tomorrow afternoon, soundings showed a strongly saturated dendritic growth zone (DGZ) between –12°C and –17°C. That is almost ideal for producing large, fluffy dendritic flakes. There was also strong lift and high saturation supporting very efficient snow growth and high snow-liquid ratios, especially in areas with stronger banding. In short, for 3-4 hours there could be snowfall rates of 1" per hour and perhaps 2" per hour at times. That's when most of the snow will fall in and around New York City. The visibility could fall under one-quarter mile during the periods of heaviest snow. Thundersnow seems unlikely in most of the area as there isn't a convective signature in the soundings. It is these dynamics, not 10:1 snow-liquid ratio maps that tell the story of what continues to look to be a significant snowfall in and around New York City. During the course of the snowfall, all of New York City's sites (Bridgeport, Central Park, Islip, JFK Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Newark, and White Plains) reported visibilities of 0.25 miles or less. The 1"-2" per hour rates occurred during this period of heavy snow. IMO, the focus on the dynamics, not varying model solutions largely drove what appear in line to be the more accurate forecasts. Chasing the models from run-to-run created the perception that there was greater uncertainty than what actually was present. RU848789 Posted January 25 Share Posted January 25 Just got in from shoveling a 3rd time, but this was the 2" of mostly sleet that have fallen since around 1 pm (6" worth of 10:1 snow by mass) and it was tough. So, between 3 and 5 pm we got 1" of pure sleet giving us 2" since 1 pm, when we had 8.3", so we're now at 10.3" of sleet/snow, besting my 10.1" guess. It's up to 17F and hoping no ZR in the last 0.4-0.5 QPF the HRRR says we'll get (mostly sleet) by midnight, but the HRRR is showing 0.1" ZR. What a storm!
