(cross-posted from general Dec thread) ... to give an idea of climate extremes at this point, current temps in lower MI are 5-10 F so this is a very chilly air mass coming in behind the snow ... I imagine the urban heat island will prevent the 1874 records from being surpassed but 24/12 would not surprise me as temp Sunday afternoon low Monday. It may still be warmer at 0100h Sunday to bump up that day's max, then Monday could see later warm advection spoiling another very low max. But these low max values probably indicate the coldest it has been in the daytime hours.

As you'll know, 1917 wasn't done by any means with this cold and snowy outbreak, all-time records fell 29th to 31st and into early Jan 1918 too.

The same can be said for 1933. And 1874 was followed by possibly the harshest winter of all, lots of record cold in Feb-Mar 1875.

Lowest maxima for Sunday and Monday for NYC

DEC 14 _ 21 (1902), 22 (1888), 23 (2010), 24 (2005), 26 (1903,1904), 27 (1898), 28 (1933)

DEC 15 _ 20 (1874,1914), 22 (1917), 25 (1871), 26 (1903), 27 (1919, 1962, 2010), 28 (1904, 1905, 1916, 2017)

Lowest minima for Monday

DEC 15 ___ 8 (1874), 9 (1883), 10 (1914, 1917), 13 (1900, 1902), 14 (1910, 1943, 1962), 15 (1904, 1921) __ 18 (1980, 2005) coldest recent years

5" of solid clear ice on the lake under a little snow. A couple guys ice fishing today out there. Currently: light snow. 28.2

Some of the ponds around here are frozen as well.  Not sure of depth but they are iced over and snow covered.  Wouldn't want to organize an ice hockey game just yet.

Yes. I am a sissy when it comes to going out on ice. I like 6". Preferably 8" of clear non slush ice. The young bucks were out there today. And drilled over the whole lake. 5" of solid clear ice.

Great to hear.  I have no idea what effect next week's' warming trend will have on that thickness?

Lake ice is a very tricky thing. A couple days of slight warming and below freezing at night is no big deal  when u get snow a several inches of snow cover on lake. Its like an insulating blanket. It will melt from below the ice.

Actually there was a break in the radar with main batch about 40 miles still to the west?

I am referring to this as a snow hole. It's not a good way to start a storm but it should gradually fill in between 10-midnight.
