As a Gateway graduate during that time and as someone who was there during the "Justin King" debacle - it was just that. A debacle.

King went to the school board early on and told them that they had to invest heavily in the football facilities or he was taking King elsewhere. Gateway did - gluttonously so at the direction of Smith. So much so that the academics suffered and still continue to 20 years later/never recovered. Just take a look at where they rank now amongst western PA schools - quite a far cry from just before Smith took over. There's no excuse to have Pentium 2's running Windows 95 when the new weight room has Xbox 360's on every TV. There was no money left for anything outside of football, but they had new everything all the time with everything paid for, despite other sports playing with broken down equipment and non-athletic organizations having to self-finance.

Then Smith skedaddled as soon as King went to PSU and left Gateway in the lurch. No mentoring of anyone, no hope for continued success. Just trying every way he could to get King ahead.

He was a diva and a selfish one at that, plain and simple. On top of that, and VERY UNFORTUNATELY, any time anyone said a word against him or his approach, it was turned into a race discussion. It had nothing to do with race imo, and everything to do with him taking the piss out of Gateway for all they were worth.

I suppose he's done okay at PSU, but in Monroeville? He's still public enemy #1 for taking a Blue Ribbon school and shifting focus to football, wringing them dry, and taking the midnight train away.

And that's from someone who went to Gateway AND Penn State.

Quite an interesting post here. I wasn’t aware of any of that. Thanks for sharing.

If the 0z and 6z runs of the GFS are even remotely accurate to what will happen, it will be an epic run up to Christmas this year! At least we have things to track so quick out of the gate this year!

.

This 6z GFS for mid next week is real nice. Let’s hope 12z continues in this direction.

was looking at 0z and 6z and yeah...like wowzers.  If 1/4 of what is advertised materialized, we'd be gettin outta the winter gates w/ some zip.

OK, I’m in.

That pattern next week has evolved into something much more favorable on modelling the last few days since my last post. Gone is dumping the trough in the west and building southeast ridging. Instead, we’re bringing the energy for what is now Sunday’s system out quicker. While that low still cuts, the faster timing and fairly weak low invites a potential light snowfall/mix event in at least interior C-PA with some cold air still in place. So that’s actually the first thing I’m looking at with this period.

That system resets the boundary, and we have a nice placement of the PV over Hudson Bay to help push down any semblance of SE ridging and we’re set for this Tues-Wed system that is looking way more wintry than it did several days ago. GFS is obviously a big and widespread snowstorm for a lot of folks. The Euro and Euro Ensemble are in fact showing this system as well. 0z Euro had the widespread precip but a more confined snow area, 6z Euro was shaping to look pretty decent but ran out of hours. Euro GPT doesn’t have it at all and those ensembles are weakly hinting at the system. Key will be a balance of amping this system up enough and placing/strength of the high to the north to set up cold and a more widespread snow swath. The feature itself looks progressive (no closed 500mb low or neg tilted trough) but low originates in the Gulf, so moisture source is there.

Sure. Just in time for me to go back to hauling water. But that may be a good thing. New (old) boss doesn't really want his trucks out in snowstorms. Present company isn't like that. They want you moving if it's legal and the roads aren't restricted.
