In the NYC records, the earliest minimum of 70+ was 74F on April 17, 2002. A value of 70F on April 18, 1976 was broken by 76F on April 18th, 2002. These are the only three minima at NYC in the 70s in April. The closest to them would be the 69F records for April 16, 2002 and Apr 28, 1990 and 2009. There were 70+ minima May 3-4 2018 (70F, 72F) and the latter of those broke a record of 71F from May 4, 2001,  but in terms of an early 70+ reading before 1976, that would be 71F on May 6, 1930.

Low of 52 to 67 already.  90s in the warmer spots very possible EWR, NE-NJ , CNJ.  Fri last day of the surge of strong warmth with another shot at 90s but more clouds in the way.  Winds go more S / SE by the weekend with system in the gulf moving through.  Coller Clouds / wet Sat and Sun.  Cooler Mon (4/17) - Thu (4/20).  Back and forth and overall bias warmer than normal with perhaps a day or two of strong warmth the last 10 days of the month.

877 - The second coastal storm in just three days hit Virginia and the Carolinas. The first storm flattened the sand dunes at Hatteras, and widened the Oregon inlet three quarters of a mile. The second storm produced hurricane force winds along the coast of North Carolina causing more beach erosion and land transformation. (David Ludlum)

1955 - The town of Axis, AL, was deluged with 20.33 inches of rain in 24 hours establishing a state record. (The Weather Channel)

1986 - A major spring storm quickly intensified bringing blizzard conditions to much of the Northern Plains Region. Up to 18 inches of snow was reported in North Dakota, and in South Dakota, winds gusting to 90 mph whipped the snow into drifts fifteen feet high. Livestock losses were in the millions of dollars, and for some areas it was the worst blizzard ever. (Storm Data)

1987 - Thunderstorms in northern Texas produced wind gusts to 98 mph at the Killeen Airport causing a million dollars property damage. Two airplanes were totally destroyed by the high winds, and ten others were damaged. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

1988 - Low pressure off the Atlantic coast produced high winds across North Carolina, with gusts to 78 mph reported at Waves. The high winds combined with high tides to cause coastal flooding and erosion. About 275 feet of land was eroded from the northern tip of Pea Island. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

1989 - Thunderstorms in central Florida produced golf ball size hail and a tornado near Lakeland FL. Fair and mild weather prevailed across most of the rest of the nation. (Storm Data) (The National Weather Summary)

1990 - Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced severe weather in central Oklahoma and north central Texas. Thunderstorms in Oklahoma produced up to six inches of golf ball size hail along I-40 near El Reno, and produced wind gusts to 75 mph at Okarche. Thunderstorms over north central Texas produced softball size hail northwest of Rotan, and high winds which injured two persons southeast of Itasca. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

 

1999: A two-mile-wide area of wind-driven hail pounded residences and farm equipment for about a 5 mile stretch at least as far as State Highway 158 in west Texas near Midland/Odessa. Hail grew up to about golf ball size and winds peaked at approximately 80 mph. The wind-driven hail broke windows in houses and blasted paint off the wooden siding. The strong winds took roofs off several mobile homes and at least one single-family house. Utility crews stated that the winds downed a total of 27 poles. The American Red Cross determined that 324 units were affected with 18 mobile homes and four houses destroyed. About 50-60 families were at least temporarily displaced.

2004 - The latest measurable snowfall on record hits Jackson, TN, causing six traffic fatalities.

2006 - The University of Iowa campus is hit by an F2 tornado. The storm severely damaged many buildings in the area, including a sorority and a local church. No fatailities were reported in the storm that caused more than $12 million in damage.

I miss this, this is like an old fashioned heatwave like we had back in the 90s.

I think we're going to get a lot of this during the summer, with heat building in from the west, like it should during the summer.

I love that 1977's early heat is showing up, yesterday it was 90 on this date in 1977.  2002's heat came a bit later.

Weekend looks cloudy / showers and winds coming onshore - big contrast.  Somewhat of a cutoff in the gulf moves up the EC.  not a huge rainmaker in any sense.  Can see the clouds over GA/FL Al

2002 and 2010 had my favorite Aprils....  even though we'll regress to cooler weather (aside from 1976) there is a nice connection between April heat and extreme heat showing up again during the summer.

We may have that that in 2002 too, those were my two favorite summers in the 21st century.  It got to 100+ and it felt so nice you could go running in that weather.

The typical climate progression would be that we get this early heat and then it regresses to a cooler rainier pattern for a few weeks (4-6) and then we get more hot and dry weather beginning in the second half of June and for July and the first half of August.  Later in August we would get the influence of the el nino and switch to a rainier pattern after the 20th or so.

Yes I really hope we get this in July again.  Our heat comes not from the SE ridge, it comes from the west, which I think we'll get this year.  Strong heat building in the middle of the country and reaching us from the West.

In the summer we just need to delay the sea breeze to come in after 3 PM to hit 100 degrees.  A nice downsloping wind like today can do that and also limit the humidity at the same time.

Chris, you posted that Mineola hit 108 in July 2010-- I thought that was July 2011 lol.  Can you check through July 2011 records to see what their highest temp was that month?  Thanks!

Just comparing it to JFK, I know JFK hit 102 in July 2010 (at or above 100 3 days.... 101, 102 and 100) and 103 in July 2011 (at or above 100 twice, 103 and 100.)
