We should know by the 18Z runs of the NAM and RGEM on Friday

Ha good call... well what did the NAM 12z show today for Friday?

nevermind just took a look at 12z NAM

.1-.25 for the whole area

.25-.50 small area of LHV

not sure about temps....looks to be overnight into early morning on Saturday so it should be cold enough N and W of the city at the very least.

Same here..

btw the crews did an amazing job on the roads. 17 is snowless and dry very impressive  considering 2 feet fell less than 24 hrs ahoago

They must have improved since this morning then, which isn't surprising since there's traffic on them again, I wasn't on 17 though.

Yes, snow removal has improved drastically in the last 20-30 years. We had 13" plus a ton of sleet in Westchester, and the roads are mostly clear today. Dobbs Ferry used another snow day but that was probably a nod to teachers who live up north; also, they had only had one cancellation for the 10" on 2/9 so they had two left. It's the end of winter anyway. Not much chance of needing another snow day.

I remember in the Blizzard of 1996, 24" of snow closed school for 3 full days PLUS a 2-hour delay on the 4th day. That would never happen today.

It would be awyfully funny if the Euro suddenly started showing Friday night's storm ( a miller B) closer to shore than currently projected. With GFS now saying .25-.5 area wide, what if the Euro comes in with .5-.75 after this last disater do we trust that?? Guess will know the answer in 30 minutes!

If NYC can hold the max to 26 degrees today, then it will be the 4th top 3 low max finish of this cold run for NYC.

3/11 28 in 1885 29 in 2017 29 in 1880
3/12 26 in 1900 28 in 1896 29 in 2017
3/13 12 in 1888 27 in 1896 30 in 1880
3/14 28 in 1892 29 in 1896 32 in 2017+
3/15 24 in 1900 26 in 1932 26 in 1895

Schools were closed again up here and I'm sure the travel ban helped the cleaning process

And if the high temperature remains below 30°, which appears very likely, today will be the 3rd day this month with a sub-30° high temperature. The last time March saw 3 or more such days occurred in 1967 with 4 sub-30° maximum temperatures.

That's the other thing: they do more travel bans and early closures nowadays in order to facilitate the process. NYC announced schools would be closed Tuesday at 12 noon Monday. This allows people to stay home and clear the roads completely to permit a more efficient snow removal.

I think the Feb 2013/Nemo debacle on the LIE woke the public up to the reality that we cannot allow continuous travel during major blizzards. It is dangerous, taxes rescue operations AND extends the clean-up process, which means hazardous conditions persist for days.

It cracks me up that the state doesn't treat/clear 17 since it's yet to be named an interstate so each town that it crosses handles a section. You can always tell which town is on their game and which isn't lol

NYSDOT handles the maintenance on 17, its still a State route.  You might be noticing the difference between the NYSDOT Middletown and NYSDOT Monroe crews, I'm not sure where their areas meet exactly.  I know I can tell the spot on 207 where the NYSDOT Montgomery and Newburgh crews meet.
