The snow around paths is starting to look like the Grand Canyon with all the striations. Anyone want to venture why it looks like this?

 

Assuming it is stratification - and not simply contouring due to something dragging across the surface of the cross-section - I would theorize it is due to differences in moisture content within layers of the snow.  As the pack compacts under its own weight different layers distort more or less than others.  More distortion results in greater distortion in the horizontal plane, resulting in the observed uneven cross-section surface.  Just a wag.

A blizzard is when I most wish I lived in a neighborhood so the streets can be left unplowed during the storm.
