From DTX's AFD:

ONCE THIS SYSTEM RACES INTO EASTERN CANADA...A SHARP ARCTIC FRONT
WILL RACE INTO THE AREA EARLY MONDAY MORNING AS A LARGE CHUNK OF THE
POLAR VORTEX PIVOTS SOUTH INTO THE GREAT LAKES. THIS WILL BRING THE
COLDEST AIR IN A NUMBER OF YEARS TO THE AREA AS TEMPERATURES FALL TO
NEAR ZERO EARLY MONDAY MORNING WITH TEMPERATURES NOT BULGING MUCH
FROM THERE DURING THE DAY. AS THE HEART OF THIS BRUTAL AIRMASS
SHIFTS OVER THE AREA MONDAY NIGHT...TEMPERATURES WILL FALL WELL
BELOW ZERO OVER THE AREA...WITH THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES (-10/-15F)
ACTUALLY LOCATED FROM I 94 SOUTH WHERE THIS AIRMASS WILL BE LEAST
MODIFIED BY LAKE MICHIGAN.
TEMPERATURES WILL STRUGGLE BACK TO AROUND
ZERO FOR HIGHS ON TUESDAY AND THEN FALL BACK BELOW ZERO TUESDAY
NIGHT. WHILE THE MAIN SNOW EVENT ENDS...LOCALIZED LAKE EFFECT
SQUALLS/SNOW SHOWERS WILL CONTINUE.

WIND CHILLS DURING THIS ARCTIC OUTBREAK WILL REACH TRULY DANGEROUS
LEVELS.
..APPROACHING 20 BELOW ZERO BY MONDAY AND THEN RANGING FROM
20 TO 40 BELOW ZERO MONDAY EVENING INTO TUESDAY NIGHT.

AFTER THIS WINTER ONSLAUGHT...TEMPERATURES DO BEGIN TO MODERATE BY
MID/LATE WEEK. WITH ANY LUCK...THIS WILL MORPH INTO SOMETHING OF A
JANUARY THAW.

All time records @ FWA

Min High -11° 1/20/1985

Min Low -24° 1/12/1918

The point for Monday is -10 and -19, probably still influenced by climo.

The record low MIGHT be safe, but the min max is going down. Also, I love the way the point throws in the word, "breezy". lol

WFO Chanhassen (Minneapolis) put out an interesting list of record temps which may be broken:  http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=mpx&storyid=99332&source=0

However, the data for MSP seems to only be from the current airport location, as the ThreadEx data shows several colder temps before 1951.  They should either change the length of record or the list of temps.

Still, obscene, rare cold is on the way.

Pretty wild as the coldest min high here is -6 and it was in Feb.. The coldest low is same as there -24 which also happened in Feb on the 12th.

For Jan the coldest high at KBTL is 1 while the coldest low is -19..

EDIT to add.. KRMY ( Marshall ) is now down to -18!

850s are colder with the early next week shot of arctic air but I'm wondering if today actually ends up colder at the surface. W/WNW winds look like the dominant flow and they are heavily moderated by the Lakes for Toronto. In contrast, today's N/NNE winds are prime cold air drainers.

Totally agree. I think that daytime high temperatures next Tuesday will struggle to go above 0F, despite having a "warmer" morning low temperature than today.

-8F currently in downtown Toronto.
