Excerpt from recent AFD from Charleston:

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHARLESTON WV

1041 AM EDT MON OCT 29 2012

.SYNOPSIS...

REMAINS OF SANDY COMBINES WITH A STRONG MID AND UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM

TO IMPACT THE AREA THROUGH THURSDAY WITH STRONG WINDS...RAIN...AND

HEAVY WET SNOW. HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION LATE TODAY INTO TUESDAY.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

NO MAJOR CHANGES TO THE FORECAST AS OF YET. CURRENT THINKING IS TO

TREND THE FORECAST TOWARDS THE NAM MODEL...BASED ON THE FACT THAT

ITS CURRENT TREND IS TO TRACK THE LOW/SANDY FURTHER TO THE

NORTH...WHICH IS MORE IN LINE WITH NHC FORECAST AND MORE IN LINE

WITH THE CURRENT OBSERVED TREND/TRACK OF THE STORM. THIS SOLUTION

WOULD RESULT IN COOLER TEMPERATURES...PARTICULARLY ACROSS NORTHERN

ZONES WHERE MODELS HAVE BEEN ADVERTISING WARMER TEMPERATURES DUE

TO WAA. BASED ON THIS TRACK...LOCATIONS SUCH AS AT EKN MAY RECEIVE

MORE SNOWFALL THAN CURRENTLY FORECAST...ESPECIALLY OVERNIGHT AND

TUESDAY AS NAM MODEL SOUNDINGS INDICATE DEEP SATURATION ALONG WITH

ENTIRE SOUNDING BELOW FREEZING. WILL BE LOOKING INTO THE

POSSIBILITY OF INCREASING SNOWFALL TOTALS AT A FEW LOCATIONS SUCH

AS AT EKN FOR THE AFTERNOON PACKAGE.

View behind me out the window

Looks like you're in a great spot Beau!

I wouldn't be surprised if you picked up 3 feet of snow (measuring the official way), but may not see more than a foot and a half on the ground due to compaction. Keep us updated smile.png

beau the arrow is a dead end culd-de sac that is at the top of the mtn. always deeper snow there you have to go in the black bear resort where the circle is once you get deep snow. it's a whole different world in there incredible scenery

Beau,

Take Midlo's advice about Blackwater Falls State Park....it's incredible covered in snow. There are numerous overlooks above the gorge and the Hemlock trees are gorgeous. take the trail down to see the falls. you can't miss this. prettiest place in WV in my opinion.

Will see if we can make it there. A little concerned about the roads - after the storm hits. Will see how it goes.

Some snow down just west of Harrisonburg like I thought would happen. Gonna make my chase early tomorrow morning. Here's the traffic cams if anyone wants them. Check out the cam west of harrisonburg on Route 250 near 640

Closest snow I have found is on 55 west just at the WV border. Only 15 miles west of Winchester and only at 1500 feet.

I am guessing right at Star Tannery.
