March 9-10 Rainy Obs Thread

I thought I'd start of a rainy obs thread with a report of a couple fresh inches of snow out here with a stiff south/southeast wind (very unusual). Already making the change to sleet/rain, though.

Looks like a nice soaker coming for most of us, although the highlands looks to get some decent snow Friday and Friday Night.

Nice spring-like winter conditions in the area http://www.visitcanaan.com/ I think the first picture of the guy going over the falls was from this morning (you can see some flakes).

That's a heck of a pic. Wow.

Surprised again as I have observed snow on my webcam much of today and continuing as of 2:45 pm...

temps have hovered around 33 all day so looks like just a bit of new accumulation on top of the old Sunday snow pack.

I am at my Boyce house and working all week so hate missing out on the snow today at my cabin.

41 with light rain here in Boyce, VA

Here is webcam shot from moments ago

Flood Warnings out west

An nice to see the Winter Storm Watches for tomorrow night and Friday in the high country.

Maybe the snow pack there ( white grass is reporting 27" at 4,300 feet and 4" new today) can absorb tonight and tomorrows rain and cut down on the head waters feeding the rivers?

Occoquan was looking mighty full today. Now just waiting forth deluge.

I'm leaving work in a few - you still okay with meeting me to get the ark? I told Scuddz I'd pick him up in it tomorrow so he didn't have to take the canoe. You may want to pick up some extra beer.

Spotty light rain began here around midday, but by 00Z only 0.06" had accumulated. Now the rain has become steadier the past hour. 42/34 for the temp spread today which is only about -4 for a departure from average.

Opequon Creek here, the Monocacy and the Potomac should all at least equal their crests from last March tomorrow and Friday.

...MID ATLANTIC COAST STATES...

QUITE A BIT OF UNCERTAINTY EXISTS CONCERNING POTENTIAL FOR

SUBSTANTIVE DESTABILIZATION TODAY...WITH CONSIDERABLE EARLY DAY

CLOUD COVER AND AREAS OF PRECIPITATION HINDERING DAYTIME HEATING

...AND BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTENING RATHER MODEST IN THE WAKE OF THE

COLD SURFACE RIDGE NOW SHIFTING AWAY FROM THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD.

HOWEVER...MODELS ARE SIMILAR IN SUGGESTING THAT AN AREA OF STRONG

SURFACE PRESSURE FALLS WILL DEVELOP ACROSS THE PIEDMONT OF NORTH

CAROLINA BY MIDDAY...BEFORE SHIFTING NORTHWARD TO THE LEE OF THE

VIRGINIA BLUE RIDGE THIS AFTERNOON. THIS IS EXPECTED TO BE

COINCIDENT WITH A STRENGTHENING SOUTHERLY LOW-LEVEL JET /IN EXCESS

OF 50 KT AT 850 MB/...AND PROVIDE A FOCUS FOR AT LEAST WEAK BOUNDARY

LAYER DESTABILIZATION. GIVEN EXPECTED SURFACE DEW POINTS IN THE

MID/UPPER 50S...THE LACK OF STRONGER SURFACE HEATING COULD ACTUALLY

ENHANCE THE RISK FOR TORNADOES...BY MAINTAINING HIGH BOUNDARY LAYER

RELATIVE HUMIDITIES. FORECAST HODOGRAPHS BECOME QUITE FAVORABLE FOR

TORNADIC SUPERCELLS... LARGE AND CLOCKWISE CURVED IN

LOW-LEVELS...BENEATH INCREASINGLY STRONG WIND FIELDS AT MID AND

UPPER LEVELS. WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY FOR THIS THREAT APPEARS

GREATEST NEAR/WEST OF RALEIGH NC INTO AREAS WEST OF RICHMOND VA

DURING THE 16-22Z TIME FRAME.
