  2. I just got an Ecowitt HP2584 a few weeks ago after my Ambient WS2902 died after 8 years, I had a headache trying to find my exact elevation too. Do you find the piezoelectric rain gauge to be accurate?
  3. At the same time though it's nothing like 1999 or 2002 this drought has been much more localized. In 1999 for example there was a water emergency in the Poconos. There are water restrictions this year down in the valley cities but it's only because there has been too much rain which has caused sediments to run off into the reservoirs. Nothing for me to worry about because all my water comes from a well.
  4. I would use 1971-2000 rainfall totals to calculate averages after that period rainfall became excessive.
  5. Wow, I grow all three species too, but mine are in pots. I bring them inside if lows are forecasted to be in the low 20’s since pots freeze much faster than the ground, but they spend most of the winter outside. My Windmill is about 6 feet tall so it’s becoming a hassle. I’ve grown more than a dozen other palm species but these 3 are far and away the most rugged, even outside of winter. I too wish they’d catch on here.
  6. Yes at around 1650 ft elevation near Lake Harmony. When I set up my Ambient WS-2000 and Ecowitt HP2584 weather stations I had to find the exact lat long and elevation and it came up with 1531 ft but I think that's wrong because it underdoes my Barometric pressure. I had to adjust it upward by about 0.05 inches on both units. If you have an easier way for me to calculate my exact elevation I'd appreciate it Chris. Here are the two numbers I used. Absolute air pressure 28.55 inches Relative air pressure 30.08 inches Is the low absolute air pressure the reason I dont feel the Florida type humidity up here?

  8. Interesting article that would solve part of the kill mechanism of the P-T. Too difficult to compare today. We have a better continental configuration with more evolved ecosystems, a somewhat smaller basin and ice sheets+lower albedo to work with, but a sun that's 2-3% brighter. The buffer is obviously better, even if the "hothouse" ceiling has fallen a lot since then due to luminosity increases.

  14. Paul, using other stations as references will only work if those stations are reference grade themselves. If there are station moves or other major changes, they are no longer "references". The stations you have chosen as "references" show 14 detected breaks in the 1941 to 1975 windows alone. I was working on this graph anyway, see below. The fact that known good references are so scarce is a major motivation for developing homogenization processes or alternatives like BEST's scalpel. These methods presume the raw data is replete with breaks and work to overcome this challenge. Your approach does not. The September 1921 TOB for Coatesville shows up clearly on the kinds of comparisons seen above.
  15. Short to mid-range guidance has definitely trended towards the dry side for much of NC with heat building back in next week. Was really hoping to kill the drought but we might yet start sliding again.
  16. 85/78/99 here I've been growing 3 different types of palm since 2017. Needle palm and Sabal Minor dont grow into trees but they are cold tolerant enough to survive our winters completely unprotected. I had some defoliation with this past winter being as harsh as it was but they survived and are growing back well this summer. I also have a Windmill palm which does grow a trunk. You would need to have some protection from the coldest days in the winter for a Windmill palm, but the vast majority of the time you could leave them unprotected. It's truly amazing being able to look out the window when it's 20 degrees outside, everything is dead and brown but the palm trees stay green like evergreens. Wish more people knew they can grow here

  20. We appear to be early phases of El Niño intensification coinciding with passing the 400 ppm mark. But at least we don’t have the giant Pangea landmass configuration anymore.
