Covid lock downs definitely broke the will of many. It seems like events are cancelled much easier now. We got up to 25 degrees today after a low of -1. I am all set with snow and cold for the year. I did get back into skiing after a 8 year hiatus. Legs feel like rubber today but it was fun. Got to do something to at least make you pretend you like snow and cold.

Mine stopped laying and molted. The 2 year olds just started laying again the past couple of weeks, but a few have stopped again. So yeah, I think it’s cold related. Their hormones are probably telling them to worry about surviving over reproducing. My older girls have not been enjoying this stretch.

Today is day 6 and tomorrow will be day 7 of continuous sub-20F temps. We haven't had a signature crazy cold outbreak but it's been consistent solidly BN cold just bleeding down the monthly departure. 7 days would be ties for 3rd longest streak on record with late Dec-early Jan 1918, Jan 2000, and late Dec-early Jan 2018. We might get to 9 days on Sunday but I think Monday will finally break the streak before we can reach 10 days. 10 days is the record....both 1979 and 1961 hit 10 days. Still an impressive streak even if we stop at 9. It's one of those things where we're certainly not breaking any all time or monthly records, but the duration of the cold is legitimate. 23 minutes ago, Ginx snewx said: Never forget those middle school days walking a mile to school in bz cold. Despite what Kev says the wind chill has been a thing for decades. I think it's more that we've had so many warmer than normal and outright blowtorch winters that the general public, which does not care about the weather in the way us weenies do, forgot what normal cold actually is around here. This one is extended to be sure, but the point still stands.

HoarfrostHubb
When I went to ULowell (UMass Lowell now) I lived in a dorm on the north campus for two years that had a steam tunnel connecting it to the main buildings. We could go to class in shorts and flip flops when it was below zero.

In 1994 they had 7 AM obs time so those 2 minima might've been registered 2 minutes apart. Other sites with midnight obs had the 2nd day 7-10° less cold. I looked into my Fort Kent records, and the longest run of subzero minima was 18 days, Jan 16 thru Feb 2, 1982. I'd expected a longer streak in that much colder climate; sometimes only a single-digit low would prevent a run of 25-30. I might get 2 here, you have a shot at a bigger string.
