Temp around 0 right now, with windy conditions. Not too bad, tho. Earlier this morning, winds were very gusty, whipping up the fresh snow we just had, but now pretty mellow in that regard. Upper level clouds moving in from the E/NE. Radar picking up some returns along the North Shore as the moisture interacts with the ridges along the shore. They are moving SW along the shoreline. Extremely light snow bands, but that will contribute to limited visibility along Hwy 61 north of me.

The temp has slipped below zero, to -1 at ORD.

We'll see whether or not if it stays below zero for Friday as a whole.

-3 at ORD as of noon.

Guidance has temps rising this evening as the core of the cold aloft slips east, so we're not going to be out of the woods after the afternoon high occurs.  In fact, I'd say there's a pretty good shot that ORD will creep to or above 0 before midnight.  But we'll see.

But I feel like you're reformed and have started down a more righteous path... That said, you're right, the cold should be the focus.

-4F currently - didn't crack 0 today.

Has he really reformed or is it just an audition to get on the staff?  :scooter:

Brownsville dropped to 27F today, and the dewpoint is currently 7F.  Not bad for the southern tip of TX.  This is their coldest December temp in more than three decades.  It was 16F exactly 33 years ago, on 12/23/1989...which is their coldest December temp on record by far.

All-time low is 12F during the infamous February 1899 cold wave.

Winds had relaxed at the surface here in town this afternoon, but this evening they've amped up quite a bit. Very similar to early this morning. Gusts 35-45 mph. This afternoon they had only been 25-30 mph.

It's official.  High of -1 at ORD on Friday, making it the first December day to stay below 0 since Christmas 1983.  Impressive stuff.

More stats for Chicago...

1983 was an eskimo's dream come true. Was that the Bengals football game I vaguely remember?

No, the Bengals cold game was January 1982. One of the coldest months on record for much of the eastern US. That’s when Minneapolis had two huge back to back snowstorms. This month often gets forgotten compared to December 1983, 1989, 2000.

Winds started howling after sunset yesterday. 50+ gusts. It was wild there for a while, until just after midnight. Winds settled down some, and are now back up to the 40+ range today.

Duluth really close to a monthly record for snow in Dec. One week left. I think we'll get it NP with the upcoming pattern. Probably smash it.

1950 44.3

2022 43.1*

1996 42.2

2013 39.9

1969 38.8

Thanks. That cleared up something that was bothering me. For that game I knew I was in Columbus still going to OSU. And I thought that in 1983 I had moved here to Indiana. So my brain was getting all confused.

Did some quick calculating, and Friday alone is going to knock almost 1.5 degrees off the monthly December temperature departure at ORD, which will take the month into negative territory.  Pretty impressive to see that much of a move in 1 day this late in the month.

Had the 24 hr temps from yesterday at 10 am to 10 am this morning timed it right, would've set the all-time coldest Christmas here in Detroit. 1983 remains champ for the 25th. About 1 day too early to have a shot here.

I agree with this. This past set looked great on paper for a few hours. In retrospect a bit more snow would have been nice, but getting buried would have been even colder.

A question for the sharpies. It was below zero all day December 23. How often does that happen at O'Hare? Seems somewhat rare.

Here ya go...

Merry Christmas everyone! It ended up snowing all night unexpectedly thanks to lake Michigan. Picked up 2.1" of fluff overnight into this morning. My mom said when she got out of midnight mass it was a Christmas postcard. The high ratio fluff covered up the low ratio sugar and drifts to make for a beautiful white Christmas.
