October 2018 General Discussion

Recommended Posts

Crazy day. Had two bouts of snow and high wind gusts. Second one had pretty heavy snow really. Bunch of trees down where I was today...2 fell on cars and 1 on top of a house. Nobody hurt thankfully. I don't get paid enough to be out in these elements.:D

Family friend lives in southern Illinois and sent this picture of some pilot gas station damage earlier.

Sad that that couldn't withstand 60 mph winds.

Right? Lol. Pretty pathetic. If you really want to see a gas station literally get shredded, YouTube “Hurricane Charley intense eyeball winds” one of the most impressive videos I’ve ever seen.

This blows the Charley video out of the water. (No pun intended). Hands down the worst eyewall footage I’ve ever seen.

That was absolutely insane. Really puts your generic severe thunderstorm or blizzard into perspective...

Had hail earlier at my house and a couple of thunderstorms with gusts around 50. One of the better storms all year in one of the oddest setups in while.

Has anyone ever seen snow and a tornado in one day? That happened today here. Didn’t think it was possible.

Not personally, but it has happened.  A famous case happened in November 1911.  Not to mention actual snow tornadoes.

That's incredible. Must be extremely rare but would be something else to see in person.

Came home to a blown down fence yesterday, dogs got loose, and we lost power for 13 hours. Rough day in Kankakee county but was fun to watch that front blow through. Today is a new day.. power is on, dogs are safe, and Bears are going to beat the Pats. Go Bears!

Brrrr we dropped down to 22 this morning. I just read a tweet that Anchorage, AK has broken 14 record highs since September 1st, holy cow.

Yeah...and their October temp departure to date is +10.4. Even more impressive is that the lowest temp so far in October is 38. That is crazy.

If this type of pattern can take hold for awhile during winter, we’ll be in good shape.

For anyone already tired of the cold regime as of late, it looks like moderation is coming... eventually.  At least more nicer days mixed in.  Just sit tight.

Followed by what looks to be a... fun time in early November

Yeah it should get more active.  Almost has to.  That late month storm is looking more like an east coast deal but it would be nice to phase that earlier and get it farther west.  That is one helluva storm for somebody if it phases properly.

late month is a poor mans Sandy type of setup. Heavily tropics driven, but without the cyclone to provide the fire. Model "verification" is going to be horrible over the next week though, so I would glean with caution like with any tropically driven jet stream.
