Dec. 26th-27th Severe Events

Recommended Posts

You must have missed what happened in Joplin then. Those big box stores do not hold up well against tornadoes. The way they are constructed, if a wall fails then the roof will likely come down.

I'm not sure if this report is even true, but I disagree with what you said. I believe a big box type store was hit in NC a few years back and collapsed(Might have been in 2011 as well).

there is a difference between being "destroyed" and "collapsed" over being completely leveled. When I hear "level" I think of seeing nothing but concrete and perhaps some left over debris of to the side, not just collapsed walls.. You are correct though. They aren't the most sound structures..

People often say 'leveled' when they see severe/catastrophic damage. I remember first hearing about St. John's hospital in Joplin on the radio shortly after the tornado. Early reports were that it was 'leveled'. Of course it was still standing, severely damaged.

I'd call this gas station in Texas 'leveled'

Is this the gas station from which one of the reported fatalities is coming from?

Hearing reports that the Target supercenter in Garland has been "leveled" according to scanner traffic..

Highly doubtful.  Target is in the NW corner of Bush Tollway and Hwy 66.  The damaged neighborhoods are 1.5-3 miles east of there.

However, Dalrock Rd and Hwy 66 was hit hard, and there's 3 supermarkets on that intersection:  Tom Thumb, Walmart Neighborhood, and Sunfresh.  A Channel 8 newsroom worker that lives nearby said the Tom Thumb was hit.

Report of 60-65 trailers destroyed at the Plantation Place RV Park in Sunnyvale. Apparently the scene is very ugly.

The HRRR is looking like things could be pretty favorable for prefrontal storms tomorrow too.

Within a very favorable environment for significant tornadoes from the looks of it.

I'm not sure. It's a picture of a gas station in the town where 2 people died at a gas station so I guess it could be a possibility.

I'm planning to head out on my first morning chase ever.  If storms fire west and south of CLL in the mostly treeless areas I think it'll be worthwhile.  East of here is just pointless for the most part.

Wouldn't be surprised to see today upgraded to a MDT at some point for Damaging winds, possibly even tornadoes, but threat area for sig tor's is relatively small...

Formidable morning AFD from HGX.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
324 AM CST SUN DEC 27 2015

...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH STRONG WINDS POSSIBLE TODAY...

.DISCUSSION...
INGREDIENTS COMING TOGETHER FOR A SIGNIFICANT SEVERE WEATHER EVENT
ACROSS SE TX. AT 2 AM...AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE HAD DEVELOPED
BETWEEN LAREDO AND DEL RIO. A WARM FRONT EXTENDED TO THE NE FROM
THE LOW TOWARD THE ARKLATEX. AT 850 MB...A STRONG LOW LEVEL JET OF
50 TO 60 KNOTS WAS NOTED FROM CRP NORTH WARD ACROSS EAST TEXAS.
850 MB DEW PTS WERE 16 C AT CRP AND AN 850 MB LOW WAS LOCATED
BETWEEN MIDLAND AND DEL RIO. AT 300 MB...WINDS WERE STRONGLY
DIVERGENT OVER EAST TEXAS WITH THE UPPER LEVEL LOW OVER CENTRAL
NEW MEXICO. THE UPPER LOW WILL SHIFT SLOWLY EAST TODAY AND
DIVERGENCE OVER EAST TEXAS WILL INCREASE. A 120 KTS SPEED MAX
WILL ROTATE AROUND THE BASE OF THE UPPER LOW AND APPROACH SE TX
BETWEEN 12-18Z. THE SFC LOW NEAR LAREDO WILL GRADUALLY STRENGTHEN
AND MOVE TOWARD NE TX. THE LOW WILL DRAG A COLD FRONT ACROSS SE TX
DURING THE LATE MORNING THROUGH EARLY AFTN AND THIS FEATURE WILL
SERVE AS ANOTHER FOCUS FOR SHRA/TSRA. THE PRESSURE GRADIENT ON THE
EAST OF THE SFC LOW IS TIGHT AND SFC WINDS AREA EXPECTED TO
INCREASE TO 20-25 MPH AND GUSTY THIS MORNING. A WIND ADVISORY IS
IN EFFECT FOR THE WESTERN HALF OF THE AREA THROUGH 01Z. WARM AIR
ADVECTION SHOWERS SHOULD ALSO PERSIST THROUGH THE EARLY MORNING
BEFORE THE STRONGER UPPER LEVEL DYNAMICS KICK IN AND THE PRECIP
TRANSITIONS OVER TO THUNDER.

FCST SOUNDINGS SHOW A HIGH POTENTIAL FOR SEVERE WEATHER TODAY.
HELICITY VALUES RANGE FROM 250 TO AS HIGH AS 400 M2/S2. LI VALUES
ARE -5 TO -7. CAPE VALUES ARE MODEST BETWEEN 800 AND 1400 J/KG AND
PW VALUES ARE NEAR 1.90 INCHES. CIPS ANALOG DATA FOR EVENTS WITH
SIMILAR PARAMETERS SHOW A CORRELATION WITH OTHER HIGH IMPACT
EVENTS INCLUDING 01/30/1999...12/18/1995 AND 11/22/1992. THESE
PAST EVENTS ALL PRODUCED TORNADOES AND SEVERAL SIGNIFICANT WIND
GUSTS. FCST SOUNDING HODOGRAPHS SUGGEST THAT SOME OF THE STRONGER
STORMS TODAY COULD PRODUCE TORNADOES. THE 50 TO 60 KT LOW LEVEL
JET WILL LIKELY MIX TO THE SFC WITH STRONGER STORMS AS WELL. CAN`T
RULE OUT A THREAT FOR HAIL EITHER BUT IT APPEARS THE PRIMARY
SEVERE WEATHER HAZARD WILL BE WIND RELATED. SPC HAS OUTLOOKED MUCH
OF SE TX IN ENHANCED RISK FOR SEVERE STORMS TODAY.

Basehunters seems to catch everything, what a video and the stuff at the end!

I haven't seen a tornado on video with the number of power flashes this one had. In the long 7 min video that was also on TWC? there was a point where there appears to be an explosion with fire and flames briefly beside the vortex...if this is correct then that is another first.

OMG Jeff P almost got stabbed by a guy with a knife!

https://www.periscope.tv/w/1vAxRPpWkwjGl

Around the 12:30 mark on that link ^

He said in his 35 years of chasing, he's never had someone attack him. He stopped to help the guy. The guy mumbled something about an attorney, and grabbed Jeff by the throat and tried to stab him. Jeff went down the road and got a police officer.

I don't have any words. He's the best and probably has seen more EF5/F5's than anyone else. The Periscope link says page not found which I suspected would be the case, hopefully it wasn't a temporary stream cache.

That Basehunters video might be one of the more impressive nighttime tornado videos ever. The amount of lightning/power flashes with this tornado really allowed for it to be illuminated very often.

Formidable morning AFD from HGX.

Some will recall that November 21, 1992 produced the only F4 tornado reported in Metro Houston. Obliviously the next day brought an extensive tornado outbreak further East.

Almost two hours till sunup but the cell directly south of CLL might be the one to start things off today.

Rotation has been increasing over the last 15 minutes. It is getting closer.

Sitting in Navasota eating breakfast right now. I was already planning on driving to Houston today, so I figured I might as well sit and wait a bit and see if anything interesting develops somewhere along the way.
