Historic Lake Effect Snowstorm

Interesting to see the sharpest reflectivity gradient now on the southern edge of the band as there is more frictional convergence with the shoreline on the northern edge. Also some pretty high ZDR values ~5 dB in the lower reflectivity to the north. That seems to be related to the temperature range being more conducive to plate-like crystals than yesterday, where the mixed layer extended up to -30C.

The folded velocities (oranges and reds next to the blue colors) show the convergence zone pretty well where the highest reflectivity and lowest ZDR values are.

This is pretty awesome (from WIVB.com: http://wivb.com/2014/11/18/pregnant-mom-trapped-in-storm-gives-birth/).  What are the odds!!!!

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A woman from south Buffalo went into labor early Tuesday. She had only one obstacle to overcome — the trip to the hospital.

After Bethany Hojnacki’s husband Jared dropped off their son with his grandparents, he turned around to head towards a place where Bethany could have her child. On the way, Jared stopped to help a woman get out of her car.

That woman turned out to be a pediatric nurse. So when plans to get to the hospital failed, and the Hojnacki’s wound up in labor at a fire hall in south Buffalo, the woman they helped with a random act of kindness was able to help them out.

She and the Hojnacki’s successfully delivered baby Lucy Grace Hojnacki just after 9:30 in the evening.

“Talk about a god send,” Jared Hojnacki’s father said. “She’s a pediatric nurse but she did do labor and delivery at one time.”

The baby is safe. Lucy and Bethany were transported to Mercy Hospital after the delivery.

Wonderful story. Even as it often doesn't garner much media coverage, such storms often bring out the best in people.

It'd be nice if the totals were updated in the hardest hit areas.

I suppose its really tough to have a snow depth of more than 50" or so with compaction from the weight, doubt we will ever know how much really fell in the hardest hit areas if one were to clear and measure every 6 hours.

KBuf received 82.4 inches of snow in 5 days in 2001. The highest snow depth at the airport was 44 inches. My depth was 35 inches. I'm going to do my 9th grade math skills to calculate my total. ^_^

Honestly this is just impossible to measure. It was blowing so hard it was tough to even try to get accurate measurements.

The sharpest edge to a band will ALMOST always be opposite of the motion.  (ie sharp northern edge when moving south, and vice versa)
