August 2014 General Discussion

Crazy about LAF. We are much further north and have managed to squeeze out two 90F days at DTW. However, looking at the extended, while I wouldnt be shocked to see a 90F (as they can happen well into September), Im extremely confident that this summer will slide by without a single heatwave (and really, nothing even remotely resembling one).

If the 2 days of 90F hold...2014 will be added to this list for the least 90s on record...records to 1874

0 days – 1882

0 days – 1907

0 days – 1915

1 day – 1875

1 day – 1877

1 day – 1883

1 day – 1885

1 day – 1979

1 day – 2000

2 days – 1886

2 days 1992

2 days 2014?

Whats impressive is when you look at the dates...most of those summers were long ago. 8 of those 11 are from 1915 and earlier.

So since 1916...or the last 99 years....

1 day 1979

1 day 2000

2 days 1992

2 days 2014?

Still, Im sure these stats will take a backseat to all the winter records we smashed when lookin back on 2014. 2014 is definitely my favorite weather year lol.

For a contrast look...here are the 10 years with the MOST 90s.

39 days – 1988

36 days – 1934

32 days – 1955

31 days – 1931

30 days – 1944

30 days – 2012

29 days – 1952

26 days – 1941

26 days – 1964

25 days – 1977

drank 12 beers today

best climo

Only on my 6th. Run of the mill climo.

According to IND's Facebook, this is the latest ever without an 89° or above day. Pleasant weather FTW.

One of the best summers. But all the same, boring as all get out.

How was the trip up north?

How many severe warnings have you had in Tippecanoe County this year, out of curiosity?  Of course, not always the best criteria for 'interesting' as much as observed severe, but it would still play a part.  Our average here is about six warnings per year, and I believe we've had seven or eight this year.

6 or 7. Nothing noteworthy has transpired in my hood. It's been a lame spring and summer here, severe weather-wise. But, you win some...you lose some.

Good memory...we've had 7 severe thunderstorm warnings and no tornado warnings.

I don't know your severe climo as well, but that sounds about typical for this point of the year, I'd guess you average 8 or 9 severe warnings a year, is that in the ballpark?  If so, it's not bad considering it was not one of the stormier summers in LAF.

We had a great time, thanks for asking. The weather was perfect in our "Circle Lake Erie" tour except for one storm we ran into in Pennsylvania that was dropping 2+" an hour rainfall rates. We just stopped and waited it out.

Well as we know, severe thunderstorm warnings doesn't necessarily equate actual severe weather happening in one's BY. Alas, I stand by my opinion that it's been a bit boring here this year in that department. Like I said though, stuff happens...oh well.

Hoping to dodge some rain today, as I'm playing in a golf outing this afternoon. It's usually a pretty fun event.

The amount of days this year where I have heard many people complain how hot it is when its in the upper 70s to low 80s is truly telling of the kind of summer we have had. 2014 - what a year for the cool crowd. Looks like a scorcher today - all the way to 84 - before we once again cool back to below normal temps the rest of the week.

I really don't know how many warnings we average but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a bit higher.  I can look it up and get back to you.

Is this the 3rd or 4th straight day of heavy rain in the Detroit city limits?  I am seeing 50 reflectivites around I-96 in Wayne County.

To answer your question, except for Monday 7/28/14, there was +TSRA and/or +SHRA in the vicinity of Detroit's city limits every day from 7/27/14 to 8/5/14...

wisconsinwx, here's the number of warnings issued for Tippecanoe county year by year since 1986.  Obviously have to take older years with a grain of salt as radar technology was less advanced back then, which would affect how many warnings were issued.  Plus I don't know if there may be some missing data.  Also, some of these warnings did not actually include LAF as the polygon was for a different portion of the county, but they were counted anyway.
