My understanding is that it's actually caused by the 300-ft. tall stack for an old research reactor (now decommissioned) at Brookhaven Lab. It's only about 1/4 mile from the Upton doppler, so it takes out a small slice there which spreads the further NW you get. The stack is scheduled to come down sometime in the next five years...

Thanks Pete.  That makes more sense than a design flaw in the radar dome (or the equipment itself).

Sure about that? Should have been above 4 with the last storm so it wouldn't surprise me to see the zookeeper pull off a 2.5 or 3". But they were under heavy echos for the duration of the time they were all snow so they should have a nice total.

Driving rain here now, watching what's left of the snow melt.

Ya lol you never know. The truth is with the last event they were at 4 at 1115 and probably accumulated another 3/4 to 1 inch, but temps warmed and they didn't measure again till over an hour later when precip slowed down and some compaction occurred. So while it was probably incorrect the measurement was right, just probably poorly timed. Anyway it was clear the park got 5 with that event but w.e they've under reported on a bunch of nickle and events so the 23.1 is probably around 24.5 in reality. 3.0 seems like a good bet for this one with an outside chance of 3.5-4 but well see. It def accumulated close to 4 here

I've seen some neighborhood measurements, but has anyone on this forum actually measured snow in central park tonight?  It's hard enough to guestimate one's own backyard just looking of the window,

Pazzo was in the park earlier, he may have gotten a measurement. 1.8 as of 8pm with much more snow falling so you'd figure at least another inch and a half if not more

15 miles due South and apparently in a different climate zone its been all rain for over an hour. Coastal front must be hung up on the LIE like usual. I think you guys have 10+ more on the season then my 30ish.

The mid level warm air was supposed to slow down as it headed north from our area overnight and eventually get hung up around the Boston area tomorrow morning. Places north and east of our area like Danbury up toward Hartford and likely Boston are in for a good thumping with this. I was always more confident about those areas than places west since the mid level warm air is coming from that direction.

Well now, that drive home was a blast! Slush covered from Soho to the S Bronx and a total sh*tshow the rest of the way. By the time I got to where the BRP crosses 95 there were all sorts of cars that couldn't get up the overpass over the train yards and I uphill slalomed through then at 233rd it was worse. It opened up for a while but shut down again where the Sprain gets hilly by the reservoir and I had to go around on the grass because the big state plows couldn't get past all the stuck cars and the road was an absolute mess the rest of the way.

The Taconic is nearly impassable in anything that's not AWD. By the time I hit Millwood it was down to ~10 mph so I got off and took 100 up to Somers and that was not too bad. But, then the back roads from there up are unplowed.

I have almost 6" here at the house and its 28*.

SUBARU FTW!!!

Rain is mixing in with the sleet now.  It will be all gone by tomorrow afternoon.

Yea, I'm hoping they don't end up measuring after a few hours of sleet.

Lol they'll come in with a final lower than the initial 1.8. Just kidding but could see them doing that and it being like 2.5 or so. Either way it appears we've seen as many 4+ events in the last 10 days as the previous 4 months of fall/winter. Crazy march, and think it keeps on giving

The insane anomalous weather continues.  It's been a few years now.  Watch us be in the 90s in a few weeks.

Once the blocking breaks, it's going to get very warm, very quickly, IMO. I foresee a rapid transition from winter to "summer".

It happens like this every year. We go from winter right into summer.
