Backyard Envy: An Early Account

After a series of snowstorms brought a thick blanket of snow to the Mid-Atlantic region (including a snowfall at Norfolk, VA) while largely avoiding New England, the December 29, 1847 edition of the Rutland Herald wrote:

In our southern exchanges we see frequent notices of cold weather, good sleighing, deep snow, &c. &c. We have kept our temper and contented ourselves by dragging through mud and rattling over frozen ground till the present time, when we see it stated in most of our Southern papers that good sleighing continues! while we, poor denizens of the Green Mountains, have not as yet had snow enough to begin a continuance with. In this state of the case we claim the grumbler's right, to grumble--and we do. It is not fair that Trojans, Albanians, New Yorkers and Pennsylvanians should be using the snow that belongs legitimately to New England. We have no idea but the very snow they are using was designed for us, but by some means got misdirected and missent to them.

Great find! Some things never change.
