Thing is that Januarys have been getting much warmer in recent decades. Just go to the Environment Canada webiste and skim through some of the years if you get the chance. If you were a betting person, you would bet on a warm January overall these days.

Toronto likely to tie December 1931 and December 2011 for one of the warmest Decembers since records began in 1839, with 2006 being the warmest.

Anyways, I realize that's off topic and should probably be a topic for the climate change forum.

Januarys have not been getting much warmer in recent decades here. The 1970s-1980s Januarys were the coldest of any decade since records began in 1870 so its terrible to use that as an average when thats the absolute minimum in terms of temp. In fact, 2000s Januarys were COLDER than those of the 1930s-1950s.

Sure why not, ORD will defy all logic and come up with another crappy month. Although I'd bump up the DTW/YYZ/LAF/IND numbers :)

Yeah dude, I'm like 80% serious on the ORD number.

But, it's just a shot in the dark guess for all them. Snowfall is so random.

January snowfall guesses. Anyone?

ORD: 1.5"

MKE: 10.5"

MSN: 12.4"

IND: 4.0"

LAF: 3.0"

DTW: 8.5"

YYZ: 8.0"

8.0", which is about 4" below normal per 30 year stats, seems like wall to wall winter the way things have gone the past few years.

But I agree with the spatial distribution (higher amounts to the west). That's why I think ORD's going to bust out of it. I'll put them down for at least 6". Really, the only reason December was such a major fail was because of some atrociously bad luck with that pre-Christmas storm.

Total here for that winter was 19.5"... 2nd worst winter ever for snowfall here. Not surprising as this area pretty much relies on the same storm track for snow as Chicago does.

The cold air is beginning to take it's toll on the area rivers.  The Rock River is starting to freeze over pretty good now.  Of course this won't last long with the warm air coming in next week.

The water level is still extremely low.  During times of flood the water would have been about 10 feet over my head at this location.  This is just outside of Erie.

It doesnt matter what time of year it is, clouds LOVE to infiltrate an excellent radiational cooling night in SE MI lol. I mean it almost never fails. Clear skies, no wind, snowpack had temps crash after sunset, and then all of a sudden the temp rises from 13F to 17F at DTW in 1 hour as clouds moved in.

Speaking of clear skies, the sun was shining for the first time in a while today, took some pics while out and about.

Hmm and I thought 2010-11 was an anomaly!

1914-15 wasnt a bad winter in Detroit. The 37.6" was only a few inches below normal, and while there were no major storms, the biggest of the season being 5.3" on Jan 18/19, there were plenty of shovelable snowfalls, and snow depth peaked at 10" in January. Also, snowcover days (65) were above normal. Christmas had a 7" snowcover. Notable snowfalls that season:

Dec 8/9: 4.0"

Dec 13: 2.4"

Dec 19: 2.6"

Dec 20/21: 3.8"

Jan 18/19: 5.3"

Jan 22: 4.4"

Mar 5: 5.1"

Nice pictures michsnowfreak. I love seeing the white snow laying on the ground during a beautiful sunset. It makes winters worth living for. I don't get that oppurtunity very much but it's picturesque when I do get the chance.

That being said, I hate these cold days without snow on the ground. I'd rather it be in the 40's and 50's with the sunshine to make it feel nice.
