bkviking
Here in Port Jefferson the tidal surging already pumped water up through the street drain on Main Street, and the water was close to breaching the dock lines. I've seen this only a few times, such as March 2010, but storm isn't here yet. East winds are.
jasonli18t
There is no scale for this kind of storm. We have a category 5 nor'easter combining forces with a category 1 hurricane which gives this storm the pressure of a category 3 hurricane. i like how you say there is no scale and then proceed to invent your own on the spot

Chaser25973
We're already at 951 and this thing hasn't even truly begun to evolve yet. I truly wonder if we could see pressures in the 1930s.
uncle W
If Sandy comes ashore in central N.J. I bet NYC will see their highest tide in over 100 years beating December 1992...March 1962 and Donna in Sept. 1960...It could also see it's fastest wind speeds... Sunny and Warm
posting the Mount Holly briefing here as well since they have responsibility for North Jersey. Hope that is okay with you guys. Of particular note are the several pages related to storm surge expectations which will likely translate further north in equal heights or greater. Also of note is the MIC's personal plea that follows the surge discussion: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/phi/briefing/packages/current_briefing.pdf

Scott747
This storm reminds me of Ike I was just commenting to someone about the similarities with respect to the downplaying, or lack of public awareness with regards to surge. I'm not near knowledgeable enough about the dynamics up that way but it does appear that the potential for surge is much greater than the general public is aware of, and as it slowly builds (like Ike did) you may have quite a few folks that wake up and a whole bunch of 'wtf' is going on. Hopefully this isn't the case and the building surge doesn't become a huge issue.

Sunny and Warm
Integrated Kinetic Energy is up to a historical 311 TJ Rating up to 5.8 as of 13z That's insane considering that further strengthing/expansion of wind field is expected for another 30-36 hours. I wonder if the IKE scale ever contemplated a Sandy hybrid, and honestly whether it should be measured against purely tropical systems. Can't imagine any future storm attaining such lofty heights unless it goes through this transition as well.
