Checkout Timberpeg, I've built about 20 of them and they're high quality. I've heard mixed reports about Yankee Barns. I've never put one up myself. 200sq/ft might be a little optimistic. 225-250 sq/ft is probably more like it. Be careful when getting sq/ft quotes because it is easy to massage the numbers and omit certain things to keep the number low. If you have questions about any proposals submitted to you please feel free to PM me as I'd be happy to help out. Life here is very good, we have a new member of the family and are enjoying her very much. Business is very good right now but the market spasms have us worried about some big projects we have in the final planning stages. We don't want to be left at the altar. The last time the market crashed we had about 3 mil in projects evaporate over night. Some of those clients have just come back to the table and we are worried they will get cold feet again. Building a house can be a great experience if you get involved with good people. Check references, any GC worth dealing with will have a long list of references. The most important obne is probably the person they are currently working with. A few shots of Timberpeg. See more at Timberpeg.com

Interest rates are so low that I am optimistic. The next 2-3 years could be real good for building before we start to inflate. Moderate inflation is inevitable methinks...and we probably need it. That's why I am thinking to buy and/or build in the next 2 years. This is a tremendous time to invest in real estate.

Beautiful house! We love the look of the Yankee Barn Homes. I am going to check out Timberpeg though. The land is really special, sitting in back of rising 60 acre plot. The building site would be up at the top of the last pasture before the woods. The view is orchards and mountains...it begs for house with huge windows and lots of open spaces.

I forgot you had another kid! Getting him/her ready for their first winter?

Thanks for the PM offer....

It's getting harder to build houses with huge banks of windows here in Massachusetts. Energy efficiency code compliance is tougher and tougher as more stringent codes are put into effect. We are building 2 houses currently that will be required to meet the new STRETCH code adopted by some towns here in the Berkshires. Good luck with the possible project and really, don't hesitate to ask me questions I'd be glad to help. We build houses from ultra modern to colonial reproductions. Mostly 2nd or third vacation homes. No lack of money here in the Berks.lol Our new daughter isn't ready for ski training yet but as soon as possible

With regards to how the term Dog Days came about, it is Greek style and the position of the man behind me and I am Sirius. It is easier in August (I think) and they thought the heat made it slippery. Best done in the summer sky after the Sun goes down.

I did learn something while in Florida ( porno show)

Glad you enjoyed your Vaca.

We have designed homes in about 150 Massachusetts communities and all I gotta say is good luck to you GC's with that one. HERS raters, blower tests, envelope sealing.... ugh.

On a side, the stretch code won't matter much since its already incorporated into the latest IECC.

We're a design/build firm though we often work with architects from outside of Massachusetts. Right now the STRETCH code matters, frankly it's a major pain in the azz. I think there will be some court challenges to this before long. We already build very tight houses and we basically see the HERS raters as a added and unnecessary expense. I prefer Alaska's building codes, very loose.

I have a lot of tomatoes on my plants, but I can't seem to get them to ripen much. I think I'll just pick the big green ones and bring them in to ripen if they don't do it naturally pretty soon.

I have a bumper crop of buttercup squash, but the pumpkins are not thriving. They were doing well in July then things turned cool and they probably needed a few more weeks of warm wx. Hopefully I get a few decent ones, but it won't compare to last year.

Oh I have a few cabbages and they look big and fat...just about ready for harvest.

51 this am and that seems to flip a switch in me and I'm back on the board. I haven't had enough beach time yet. The tomatoes have been fantastic here....it has been pretty hot out this way compared to you. My Brandywine heirlooms are just coming in...enormous and unbelievably sweet. Just put in some mustard greens, kale, lettuce, beets, carrots and chard for the fall. This week of rainy cool weather should really help them. My tomatoes should go into mid September...I'll be canning and freezing like crazy. Please remind me during the first big stahm that I should go pull out some tomato vegetable soup.

All is well here. We lost our old dog Zoe in early June. She was a golden who made it to 14. Now we have Sophie a little 12 week old blond golden. Life is good, business is great. We are pondering building a Yankee Barns home on nice piece of land....or buying a condo in Philly as a second home. 200 a square foot is what I'm thinking...

You are well it seems?

Got home about 2:30 and unpacked, laundrty etc..then hit the yard around 4:00 since it looks wet by early tomorrow. Sucks to be home, but def my favorite vacation of all time..and we've been to the Whites the last 5 yrs. Attitash alpine and waterslides FTW

Glad you had fun, we just rolled in around 8, as usual the state of New Jersey almost ruined the vacation, NJTP was closed so had to take 287 which adds 40+ miles, traffic, state is a cesspool. Totally bummed out to be home, thankfully heading back to SC for Thanksgiving for a week and also April break for a week before the two week stint next August.

Your representative normals for today are 78/55, so a high of 76 isn't exactly fall-like; perhaps for me, but not for you. Nice try though lol.

Its all relative to averages... not worth comparing a mountain location to the coastal plain. Its like if the high is 60F at 4,000ft is that a "fall-like" day when that is the average high for this time of year? An October "fall-like" day is more like rain/snow mix with a high of 38F up there.

Where are you pulling normals for the East Slope from? I'm curious about that climo based on what is posted here from Pete and Mike.

It's based on average NCDC normals for 1981-2010 within 25 miles of 72.9W 42.4N (a.k.a. W Chesterfield MA) and +/- 300ft of 1350ft elevation.

I thought of you today while I was driving around with my in-laws and we passed a wet-footed swamp maple that was obviously stressed out because it was showing red color on Rte 190 in Union. A definite standout, but it was there and I recalled that you hadn't seen any up in the Whites and now we have one in our backyard!

Looks wet the next few days...The highs aren't too bad but I wish we had cooler lows. We haven't had too many nights in the 50s since early July and the last few nights have gotten me ready for fall!

Well today was 76/47 here, solidly below normal using your own numbers. I did say EARLY fall-like conditions. To me EARLY fall is characterized by cool nights and mild days with low dp's. Today featured both. Plus a breeze. Tomorrow looks cooler still with the addition of heavy rain. Yup, cool and wet FTW.
