9.0 Earthquake strikes Japan

Recommended Posts

Pretty amazing to think we had a massive earthquake just 6 years ago, 2 out of the top 5 since 1900 occuring within 6 years....I'm guessing thats not pure fluke.

I think it is just the way things happen. Over the millions of years these plates have been moving other clusters of quakes could have happened.

Been wondering about potential stresses building up almost the faults now along the U.S. west coast. There have been major events within the past year in S. America, Japan amd New Zealand (althought not quite as strong there). You just have to wonder if it is our turn next.

If LA gets an earthquake anywhere near the strength of this earthquake, the damage would be unimagineable. Japan is the most prepared country in world for earthquakes.

Geologists have been saying for years that the west coast is overdue - whatever that means. I also wonder about the New Madrid fault I mentioned earlier. There has been unprecedented activity in the Oklahoma / Arkansas region the past 2 years. Just small quakes but swarms of them. Some attribute it to the fracking for natural gas but who knows?

Just this morning there was a 3.2 east of Oklahoma City.

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Oregon Emergency Management on Friday advised coastal residents to evacuate before 7 a.m. local time due to the risk of a tsunami.

The massive 8.9 magnitude quake in Japan triggered tsunami warnings for most of the Pacific basin, including northern California and Oregon.

A spokeswoman for the state's emergency management office said no residents were being forced to leave. She said schools would be closed along the coast and the National Guard was on standby.
