9.0 Earthquake strikes Japan

Recommended Posts

The USGS is pretty good...they have often not issued advisories when neighboring agencies did....and they were correct. They said correctly in 2004 that no additional tsunamis were a threat in the indian ocean when the agencies out there were warning of more. They usually err on the side of caution. They've had several tsuanmi warnings that did nothing like the one in Hawaii last year.

They might issue one, but they are probably waiting for more data from buoys in the central PAC.

Yes, the tsunami in Hawaii last year was something like 6 inches there lol.

That makes sense, it just def looks awkward when you see mexico to chile under tsunami warning and US/Canada with nothing for right now

They still might issue one...but I think most people would trust the United States agencies on that type of warning over other countries.

BTW, when's the last time Antartica has has a tsunami warning? Or even a tsunami at all?

They've probably had plenty of them in the past but since nobody lives there, its completely moot. There are a few stations there now so they pretend to take it a bit more seriously, but in all honesty, nobody is in danger in Antarctica where tsunamis will be crashing into huge ice shelves.

Interesting. Was just surprised when PTWC put them in the tsunami warning

These high end earthquakes actually alter the earth's rotational period slightly.

Did you notice the strong -Bz/geomag storm today and of course the x-flare? These are the types of events that solidify those speculations on solar induced earthquakes.

Well, I think that Antarctica would be prone to tsunamis if only because they border all the world's oceans except for the Arctic.

Yes, it seems a bit too much of a coincidence considering that the sun has just started "coming back to life."

This is a list of megathrust earthquakes.... the interesting thing is only one of these was among the top ten deadliest earthquakes (that was the 2004 Indonesian earthquake.) The Portugal earthquake from 1755 I referenced earlier is on this list as a 9.0

http://en.wikipedia....rust_earthquake

However, the 1755 earthquake magnitude is an estimate since there were no seismometers back then. The 16th Century China earthquake is estimated as a high 8. The 1960 Chilean shock at 9.5 is the strongest for which we have any measurements. Talking about crustal deformation in these big shocks, the 1964 Prince William Sound Earthquake resulted in crustal deformation over an area the size of the state of California.

The Gemag storm is barely a G1 and a X1.5 flare is not all that intense especially since it did not produce a CME. It's very probable that the 7.3 a couple of days ago in that area was the trigger that sent the fault over the edge. Also, X flares at this stage in the cycle are not uncommon-in fact, it's about 2 years after minimum when expect to see the first ones of a new cycle.

Steve, do you think this earthquake might also be linked to one from a previous year? I was reading earlier where the last Chilean earthquake might have been linked to the one in 1960. This linkage of the same fault being affected has been traced back to the 1575 Valdivia earthquake.

This is unbelievable. This could be really bad depending on how well these Tsunami advisories verify. :(

The scope of the areas under some sort of advisory is amazing, from the west coast to Antarctica to South America to Japan. At least a lot of the farther away areas have a ton of warning time, however, so hopefully we can at least avoid losing too many lives.

12am (west coast time) watches issued, lots of people sleeping at this hour. Time to put the training to the test over there. Staye safe everyone. Unreal events occuring.
