42.8° this morning in my neck of the woods

Thanks for chiming in Jebman. That storm was a doozy! Think we saw you walking on Jeff Davis Hwy before we migrated off it and over to I-95 (haha - joking!) I was 25 att and did a lot more walking back then too. The ridicule in the media afterwards was intense. There were a lot of pro mets on TV who had to endure some tough questioning from public authorities (DOT, school administrations, first responders etc.) This was in the pre-Internet and pre-cell phone era when email and social media was not really a "thing" yet. (Some people were connected or had early versions of cellular technology, but not many). So most of the banter in the aftermath was in the news and newspapers. That storm had significant influence on how DOT planned for events thereafter. Wish Wes would jump in with his recollection of that event. From a meteorological perspective, it was a real fluke.

Totally but we’ve had such a warm fall that I wouldn’t mind a quick turn to winter and that pattern could probably yield some early snow
-
IAD got down to 34F.
-
Went hiking from bottom of Ceder run to Hawksbill peak in Shenandoah (around 3000ft elevation gain) and got to walk through all the different levels of fall colors. Best leaves are from 2200-2700 ft on the mountain.

36.3 for the low. Frosty in the shaded spots
-
31.4 for the low with heavy frost. Should have covered some of my late season greens. Had to end at some point I guess.
-
28.0 early this morning with a heavy frost.

may have to reschedule But this is a pretty intriguing setup. Triple point crossing the region with steep mid-level lapse rates and a surge of higher theta-e air. -

Low of 39. National high of 99 at Rio Grande Village, TX and low of 9 near Bonanza, UT. -
35.3 for a low here, bit of frost but just down the road nearer the river a heavy, heavy frost. I'd say growing season is done although we pulled everything last weekend.

No! I want to golf. -
Indeed, yet the temperature adjustment made to the 1981-2020 normals was to make a revision downward, as if Central Park was running too warm.
-
Yes, my first sub-40 for this season at 37.6 .

Definitely becoming more intrigued with early Monday morning, particularly out towards eastern sections. Could see a narrow stretch of wind damage and maybe a tornado -
If we can get MLI into the double digits for seasonal total this season then I guess I'd consider it a win lol.

From the past two mornings partially reiterated: No chatter yet on the impact of the block - a block that would be helpful for wintry weather in winter. The block lasts at least through October and now seemingly the first week of November?. I didn't carefully check whether ensemble modeling nailed this 5H blocking, October 1 or earlier? EPS did not have it very well at all for late October. Anyway, while the Ideal Greenland Block shifts westward to Canada...its still a block and will be effective (I think) on sending eastward moving shortwaves Into negative tilt along and south of I80 for our area, the remainder of the month. That should mean additional meaningful rainfall and a couple good storms. Cyclically since at least this past Wednesday, the ECMWF OP CF has a squall line of scattered 45-60 MPH gusts Monday morning, with differing target areas in NJ/e PA/srn NYS. Could be a few power outages/branches down. May not be able to thread in advance but be alert. Bumpy flights eastern quarter of the country later Sunday-Monday morning and some decent 1-3" rains for our subforum Mon-Tue. Saw the drought monitor and you've seen subsequent discussion. I did review the 10 min video provided but not the hour long-yet.

Yea, this is what I was getting at...I see what raindance is saying on it not mattering as much for the particulars, but it's tough to a great phase on the east coast without it. It can still happen if it's mainly N stream, bu that takes a lot of folks essentially out of the game. -
This is a function of the tree growth since the 1990s. So the high temperatures have been artificially suppressed by a large margin when the trees are leafed out. Same reason for the summer decline in highs and 90 days over this period. Notice how NYC is the only station to show a slight decline in high temperatures from 30 years before and after the new ASOS was put under the trees in 1995. NYC used to measure temperatures out in the open like all other stations do before the station change in 1995. Once NYC drops the leaves by later in the fall the temperature trends are closer to the other stations. But even then NYC still has a slight cool bias during the winter due to the dense tree growth and lower sun angle enhancing the shade.
