That was 0.6° above the prior 1981-2010 baseline. It will turn somewhat warmer tomorrow with the temperature topping out in the middle 80s. Showers and thundershowers are possible late tomorrow and Wednesday. Excessive heat with highs in the middle and upper 90s will be just south of the region in such cities as Baltimore and Washington Tuesday through Thursday. The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +4.2°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was +2.6°C for the week centered around August 26. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +3.93°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged +2.50°C. The ongoing strong El Niño, which has reached super El Niño threshold, will continue to strengthen through the summer. The SOI was -0.79 yesterday. The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was +0.654 today. El Niño summer pattern finally kicking in

LibertyBell
14 hours ago, bluewave said: JFK was able to finish this summer with the 4th highest number of 95°+days similar to some of the big 90° summers you mentioned. But stronger sea breezes overall lead to a lower total of 90°+ days than those years. So the higher end heat early on boosted JFK into the top 10 of warmest summers. While the developing super El Nino summer of 2015 was also warm for average temperatures at JFK, it didn’t have the major 95°+ and 100°+ heat this summer had. So the magnitude of the heat this summer was a first for such a high end El Niño event. If so there are two el nino summers ahead of it, 1963 and 2002. This was an extremely front loaded summer, no really hot days after the middle of July. Summer ended after July 15th. Too much rain for it to be hot. The early part of July was like a less extreme version of 1966 but the pattern didn't hold because the dryness in 1966 lasted until the blockbuster winter of 1966-67 began. What do you think of the idea that a very wet last month of summer leads to a warm less snowy winter?
donsutherland1
August finished with a monthly mean temperature of 75.8° in New York City (Central Park). That was 0.3° below normal (1991-2020).

This may reduce the apparent discrepancy in temperature trends relative to other NY area sites.

JFK had two such days and LaGuardia had five. There have been 21 years where Central Park had none in August. The most recent such year was 2023.
