We’ve had a bunch of those dropping out in the back usually starting around mid summer and going right through early fall. I always see squirrels and deer gobbling up the little nuggets at the odd ends of the day. Plus they hurt like hell if you’ve ever happen to stumble on one of those! edit: does this one look similar? (Took this a couple years back) Looks like pignut. I personally don't like this stuff. It doesn't split. If they grow straight they're actually a beautiful tree.
