cutlew
Coincidence that packers fans wake up to that view the morning after a bears playoff loss?? I think not.
Brian D
-10's with some -20's (-sd's along the shore) this morning. Day winds have kicked up as well, keeping wind chills ugly. BTW, my deck is starting to pop now. With the severe cold later this week, more than likely the house will do the same. As the frost gets deeper, the house will shift slightly, creating popping noises. They are loud enough sometimes to make you jump.
Brian D
Ice on the Lakes as of Jan 18. This will expand, and thicken quickly this week. Most of the ice is new/thin, with bays being medium thick. N bays of L Superior are thick. The residents of the Apostle Islands (NE of the Bayfield Peninsula) should have driveable ice by the end of the month. They use ferries during non-ice times. I’m following things closely hoping to get the chance to walk into the sea caves this year if the ice is thick enough.
sbnwx85
Frigid, windy day with some blowing snow in my neighborhood. The lake effect pixies plus blowing snow are making for tough conditions when you get into the northern part of St Joseph County. There’s a pile up on the Toll Road right now. I can’t even imagine how bad it must be along the west coast of Michigan today.

WestMichigan
A good aerial view of it here - Roughly 100 vehicles involved in winter storm pileup on Interstate 196 in Michigan | Fox Weather It is going to be a while before they get everyone out of that mess.
michsnowfreak
Deep winter for sure. Today was like a smaller scale 2014 with the bitter winds and constant blowing and drifting snow. We've picked up several dustings the past few days but the drifting snow today was the most noticeable. DTW snowfall January 8.7", season to date 25.5". Here 8.8" January, 26.1" season to date. Arklatex area/southern AR look like they could be ground zero where the ice band sort of pivots.

You can find actual soundings here. https://weather.uwyo.edu/upperair/sounding.shtml Found NOAA's sounding page. Notice the difference in temps from what was on the Wyoming site. Strange. Yet this mornings sounding looks good. https://www.spc.noaa.gov/exper/soundings/

OrdIowPitMsp
There’s now 16.5” of ice on Lake Nokomis. The U.S. Pond Hockey Championships were supposed to kick off today but are postponed due to the cold. Not my photo but here is a Zamboni getting the numerous rinks ready in the snow yesterday.
sbnwx85
Brutal winter day again. Frigid, windy and lake effect snow. The flakes and the wind is probably breaking them apart but it’s making for low visibility at times. Also, the snow is developing just a few hundred feet above the ground so the radar doesn’t look impressive. Also, the sun peeks through between snow showers. Road salt isn’t working because of the cold so there are a lot of slide offs and crashes. I even had to help my gf who slid off the road in a neighborhood this morning. Very arctic feel today. It’s the type of weather to be on the lookout for optical phenomenon you normally only see out the airplane window.
michsnowfreak
With all the blowing and drifting the past week i got to thinking. The drifts look cool but Im not a drift person overall. It compacts the snow too much. Exposes some grass blades in open areas. My avg depth is like 5" now. Packed powder. Perfect for cross country skiing and winter hiking but if there wasnt so much wind it'd be fluffier and deeper. Tundra sunset

Mostly loamy, but a little clay mixed in as well.
