I remember when we had our burst of snow last week in the morning, my thermometer showed 33 degrees but I had a small puddle of water on a garden supplies container frozen. Lots of variables factor into this, like surface type, time of year, time of day but it can be more of a difference than people realize. 2 hours ago, bluewave said: We have 10 days to see if places like NYC can have their first freeze of the season. Stations like HPN and ISP still haven’t had their first hard freeze at 28. Even more rural locations like FWN still haven’t dropped below 20°. So all of our stations are still in the top 5 warmest fall lows due to how warm North America has been this fall. To that point, my lowest temp of the season occurred this morning and its only 25. Most years I'd have some lows in the teens by now.

For non-radiating locations right on the Hudson from northern Westchester to southern Dutchess, this fall has felt just about normal for the past 20 years. It's been consistently cool and not cold with a lot of wind. That should skew the radiating spots warm but less so the river towns.

Agreed, the wind is certainly a factor as well as the timing of clouds moving in/out. There is no way to pin my stats on any one reason, they just are what they are. We also got some record cold earlier in November 2019. Though the lows weren’t to the level of late in November 2018. The big story in November 2019 for my area back on the GSB was how late the plants were booming with the 70° warmth earlier in the month. That October had the record mid 90s warmth. Our azalea was still in full bloom that November before the three nights in the low to mid 20s. The plant never came back the following spring due to the freeze damage. Krs4Lfe
Looks like the day before Thanksgiving will be quite warm in NYC, around 60 degrees. Thanksgiving should be a little cooler, and then it seems like we go into a prolonged stretch of colder than normal temps from Black Friday through at least first 10 days of december (so around 2 weeks of below normal temps for at least the foreseeable future). Hopefully next Wednesday is last warm day for a while.
Krs4Lfe
But yes, the coldest we've had in northeast Queens thus far is 33 degrees last week, around 6-7 am one of those days, I believe it was Veterans Day. Used to regularly have the first freeze by mid november, but most of the 2020s, it's been pushed back to December. First frost used to be late October, now it's been pushed back a few weeks as well. I noticed Pittsburgh has obliterated its longest stretch without 4" of snow, and this includes data from the downtown station that was a few hundred feet lower in elevation with a seasonal snowfall average of about ~12 inches less than the airport. So this is completely unprecedented since at least the 1870s. I have to wonder if the 40N parallel is simply too for south to see such heavy snow with the current atmospheric conditions? Maybe NYC will fare a little better being on the coast? I think NYC will eventually see another 4” day. Not sure when though. But the more impressive streak for NYC had been no March 10” daily snows since 1993. It’s possible that the climate has warmed too much for that record to be reached again. 1993-03-13 40 28 34.0 -7.8 31 0 2.37 10.

Temperatures have not warmed so sharply and abruptly that such storms are precluded. I suspect that this winter will see at least one such day in both cities.
