BretWx
If it's going to be an ice storm, I would 10000% prefer for it to end in rain at least to melt things off. However, the temps early next week won't help at all....

Ill just head to the casino and drink and play craps. Would have loved the foot plus with sleet. Ill pass on the freezing rain

Oftentimes we are 20 degrees colder than Asheville. Changeovers to rain are frequently predicted but rarely come to fruition. We are blocked in by 5-6000 foot peaks on all sides.
BretWx
It is Wednesday and this thing is trending slower. I think the main callout here should be what was in the GSP's WSW re: ICE. And be prepared for that scenario. I don't have enough fingers to count how many times things have gone north or south 3-4 days out. We all went through Helene and that 10000% taught me to never have my guard down and to be prepared for anything no matter what.
Tyler Penland
At the same range, the Euro was 2-3mb too weak on the current high in the northeast. It didn't latch on to proper placement/strength until about 84 hours out, after being more correct in the 5-7 day range than 3-4. Small changes, but small changes could have big impacts this go around.

BretWx
Also, I think one thing that is getting looked over is the wind gusts. An ice storm + wind. I mean, we all know. If this low is going to crank either way.
Met1985
Another thing after dealing with this shit show of a system the Euro is spitting out an extremely stable deep trough over the East the next 10 days.
SnowDawg
I hope local communities are starting to get very serious about setting up shelters. This kind of ice with those kind of temps afterwards is a deadly combination.

Only time I have seen them close was during covid
cold air aloft
Less than 72 hours before the event, I honestly don't think I will be surprised whatever the outcome is. A few days ago I was thinking all snow above I-85 and while that doesn't look likely now, it still wouldn't totally shock me. I believe the next 48 hours in the modeling are going to offer up a few surprises. What a strange setup all of this is. Might as well enjoy the ride y'all!
