Ski Sundown started snowmaking on December 1st. Currently making snow. Last year snowmaking started on December 8th with opening on December 13th. I'm thinking opening is sometime late next week.

My first lesson with adaptive skiing is booked for December 27th.  Can't wait to get back out.

What kind of adaptive skiing do you do?  I started teaching adaptive skiing at Jiminy Peak last year.  It's amazing the variety of options out there to get almost anyone who wants to ski out there!

Even those of us with no disabilities other than abject clumsiness?

Didn’t you ski with a bunch of us at the Berkshire East weenie gathering, when you were still rocking stand up alpine skis?  Seems like yesterday, but that was a long time ago I guess.

Yes that was me. Skied standing up until March of 2022. Just too weak currently to ski standing up. Been doing adaptive skiing at Ski Sundown for 2 years.

Did alot of skiing with my son. He's taken up skiing again and will be with me on December 27th.

You rock! I work with traumatic brain injury clients and am looking into getting one of my clients into adaptive skiing this year.

Wow, that’s awesome! I don’t think we have bi-skis like that at Jiminy? Ours all have parallel skis and the skier uses outrigger poles or attached outriggers. We ski behind them with tethers. Are you tethered when you ski? I’d love to see a video if you have one. I want to show this to our director. I also skied with you at Berkshire East way back in the day at a forum ski get together. So glad you are still going out there!

No I can't balance my hands for turning.  My arms are too week. The sled has a steering rod and the ski's angle to let me turn. I pull back on the rod to brake. I ski tethered to my instructor. The sled is locked down and spring loaded and pops up for getting on the chairlift.

Great article on the new Burke

A new ownership group has worked to restore Vermont's Burke Mountain into a top ski resort in the region. https://www.telegram.com/story/sports/columns/2025/12/03/snow-sports-after-years-of-neglect-new-owners-have-rescued-burke-mountain/87557725007/

My itch to ski again is growing. Been over a decade since I’ve done downhill, not really prepared to right now but want to keep that itch going and growing. Biggest hurdles are ticket prices and gear, both of which are not in budget.

I took a decade off 35 to 45. Started out slow.  1st time  back using rental skis I was shitting my pants heading up the Barker lift. Like riding a bike all the muscle memory still there .it was on like donkey Kong after that. Check FB Marketplace for deals. If yout budget is limited look for midweek deals. Go go go while you ca. Don't be a procrastinator .You won't believe how fast you go from 50 to 70. Get it while you can Bobby Bobalina.

I would think so as well.  The base is very solid for it's depth.

Heard some reports that Jay Peak was a bit wind affected following the squalls on Thursday. That fierce northwest flow deposited a ton of snow downwind into what is usually the deepest locale in New England. I was confident depths would be good, and a thorough exploration on Saturday found conditions that exceeded my expectations.

The whole zone is wide open for the taking, though some danger still lurks with a smattering of open drainages poking through. Up high, tight tunnels transition into spacious gladed gullies choked with powder. Bushwacking and bootpacking into a zone famous for it's felonious past yielded a skied off chowder experience. When the forest closes back in on the scar, prior traffic disappears into an extensive menu of deep lines that open up among powder plastered conifers and hardwoods. I've never been to Japan, but I imagine this is as close as the East Coast can get visually.  Hard to believe it was December 6th

South of I-89, it is a different world. MRG managed to get the single going, but rock skis are an absolute necessity. If you're willing to take a few shots to your skis, conditions were actually pretty ripper up high with tons of funky low tide features. Chute was especially sporty, with a double (or triple) drop that was teed up right under the lift.
