We haven’t had 105° heat in September since 1953. Back in those days we had extensive drought across the country which allowed late season 100°+heat.

Now we have become more monsoon-like with 103-105° heat back in June. Then we got the 5+rains in spots. The heat week this week wasn’t as strong as the June heat was.

Yesterday we got the heavy rains in spots again. Now we are seeing a more comfortable pattern for a while with plenty of easterly flow.

My guess is that the next warm up in Mid-August will continue the pattern of being weaker than each earlier heatwave. So probably no more widespread 100° heat. But a few of the local warm spots in NJ could see more 95°to maybe a few isolated readings around 100°.

We saw this past week how JFK and points east couldn’t rival the record 100°+ heat of late June. So a weaker reflection with more onshore flow this time.

Isn't it ironic though how the SST were so much cooler in June when we had the 100+ heat at the coast?  Maybe SST are not that important when it comes to extremely high temperatures (but more important when it comes to elevated mins and higher dew points and humidity?)

wouldnt be surprised to see alot of clouds on one of the two days...starts completely sunny and then you get those clouds start puffing up and before you know it, its mostly cloudy

From what I have seen, Saturday, Sunday and Monday will be mostly sunny (a great weekend!), Tuesday will be partly cloudy and Wednesday and Thursday will be mostly cloudy.  No rain at all though during that period.

Have you been able to play with the EC AI ensembles, yet?  I am seeing they are outperforming all other ensmbles.

Just a little ahead of the regular EPS but both systems are scoring much better than the GEFS.

Thanks Tony, wow JFK almost had a 3rd 100 degree day, there was a 99 in July just before they hit 100.

There must have been a lot of offshore flow that summer!

I wish the dataset included Dew ppoint temps

We may never see heat like 1953 again in our lifetimes simply because the climate has become wetter.

As a matter of fact climate change should be framed more in terms of moisture than temperature.  The moisture change is much more significant than any change in temperatures especially during the summer.

1953 sure had its period of strong heat and the record late Aug/early sep heat but there were in some cases 2 week period of cooler too imbedded.  33 90 degress days at EWR and 12 at JFK.

JFK didn't have a single 100 degree day which is why I rank it behind years like 1944, 1948, 1949, 1955 and 1966.

1966 really had the hottest summer from that era.

Chris posted that earlier, 1983 had the most 75 degree dew points of any summer prior to a few years ago.  It was an incredible combination of both heat and humidity.

There's actually an interesting  step up and leveling off that happened over time:

In its era 1949 had the highest combination of heat and humidity and that was only exceeded decades later by 1983, which was not exceeded until 2010.

So as far as our hottest summers go, we have a new record hot summer and then a levelling off for a few decades before we hit the next higher peak.

this weather is fine after a heatwave but no one would want this weather every day.

I don't mind rain and cool weather for a day or two after a 4 day heatwave, but not every day.

These summer days under 80° have become a rarity over time.

Daily records for NYC for August ...

Notes: temps in brackets with low min indicate some associated maxima that are not the low max records.

Also, for 2d rainfalls, which routinely include the previous day (e.g. Aug 1 is July 31-Aug 1),

a * symbol indicates all the rain fell on the date and ** indicates all the rain fell the previous day. Otherwise the two days

both had some of the total indicated. Some notes below the body of records indicate secondary noteworthy events not records.

A break in the heat is now underway. This morning featured refreshingly cool temperatures. Central Park saw a low of 63°, which was its coolest low temperature since June 28 when the low was also 63°. Low temperatures included:

Bridgeport: 62°
Danbury: 61°
Farmingdale: 63°
Islip: 65°
New Haven: 63°
New York City-Central Park: 63°
New York City-JFK Airport: 65°
New York City-LaGuardia Airport: 64°
Newark: 63°
Philadelphia: 66°
Poughkeepsie: 59°
White Plains: 61°

Generally somewhat cooler than normal conditions will likely persist through the first week of August. It could briefly turn warmer around the middle of next week.

There remain hints on the long-range guidance that a new round of heat could develop past August 10th.

The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +0.6°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was -0.2°C for the week centered around July 23. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +0.48°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged 0.00°C. Neutral ENSO conditions will likely continue through the summer.

The SOI was +3.58 today.

The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was -0.359 today.

Look at all those 100+ days in August in 1944, that would probably have been my favorite summer from that era.

Roger, were all the 100+ days in 1944 in August? None in July -- although that entire summer was very hot?

And I see 1955 peaked at 100 on one day in early August and also had a very hot July, were there more 100 degree days in 1955 in July?

I see 1933 was 100 on August 1st, that was the extension of a heatwave that peaked on July 31 at 102 degrees, the only 100+ temperature recorded in the last week of July at Central Park.  Were those the only two days of 100+ in 1933? Thanks!

On August 20th, 1983, JFK hit 100 for the second time that summer (the first time was in July), how much cooler than that was NYC?

Hoping it can clear out by Friday late afternoon/evening, the other models seem to be moving it out a bit quicker than the Euro, we shall see.
