Isn't the priority of a major airport to move people?  Why haven't they redirected or reduced cargo planes at Newark if there is such a problem there?  It shouldn't matter if Fedex or UPS have major contracts.  In a state of emergency as it seems Newark Airport is in, shouldn't the FAA step in and at least try to relieve some of the air traffic?  Oh boo hoo, we get our packages a day or two later because Fedex flights are redirected to JFK, LaGuardia or Philly...

Some AI estimates for May:

Final April numbers will be posted tomorrow.

Mid-month update on the AI idea:

It's still too early to be sure about the extent of skill or lack of skill involved in the forecasting realm.

In another area, AI continues to progress. It is now able to turn photos of flowers into works approaching fine art. Two examples are below from processed photos taken at the New York Botanical Garden this spring. True photo editing does not yet exist, but could be about a year away. OpenAI is working on it, at present. Other AI companies are likely pursuing similar avenues. Should AI develop true photo editing capabilities that are easy to use, that development could disrupt the market for processing software (Topaz, Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, etc.).

Question:

I was in Warsaw this week and we saw snow on Thursday. Trying to understand how anomalous that is? Does anyone know where you can find European historical data?

I searched it up because I was curious myself and someone wrote that their grandmother told them that when she was little it used to snow in May once or twice every so often.

Someone else said it snows there in the 2010s as well.

It can't be that rare then I guess.

A week or two ago some peaks in Greece got some snow as well.

if it can snow here in May it can definitely snow in Warsaw in May.

I didn't know about Greece, it must have been in the mountains.

It is 2025.  Should we be using the most recent 30 year average temperatures from 1994 through 2024 instead of 1991-2020, if we are really concerned about comparing our daily averages to a "representative" trend?  I sense many inconsistencies with not using the full history of data to calculate the daily average temperature instead of some "arbitrary" set of years.  I mean, if you want to emphasize recent trends, why are you discounting the most recent 4 years?

It is not that simple. Cargo is big money. JFK has the highest value of cargo shipments in the US. Fed Ex has a major hub at EWR.

Cargo is very important to the functions of airports.

The immediate acute problem at EWR is one of the two main runways being closed. That will end in mid June.

The other lingering problems include moving a bunch of disgruntled union employees from Westbury to Philly because they could not longer staff the Tracon on Long Island due to high costs and old housing stock. That will payoff long term as newer employees are more willing to live in the suburbs of Eastern Pennsylvania with its low taxes and cheaper/newer houses and they can actually FULLY staff the Tracon.

The other long term problem is fully modernizing the ATC system. That needs funding and attention

I was aware of FedEx planes over the years. It wasn't until one of my ones began working for a major passenger airline on the cargo side did I learn about the cargo that goes on passenger planes as well.

I realize the political and financial ties to "prioritizing" fedex, but you CANNOT put the commercial flights second to moving cargo.  Both are big business, but I'm pretty sure the FAA's priority should be the safety of the citizen's (passengers).  We know airports play the game of hiding delays/cancellations by manipulating definitions, but Newark Airport seemed to be over the top.  If Newark airport continues to have too many cancellations, then cargo has to be minimalized - reduced flights and only allowed during "off hours".  So you get your package one or two days later.  Thanks for your insight to some other the other "below the radar" problems going on there.  The federal government is offering bonuses to Air Traffic Controllers who ae retiring to try to keep them on.  They will also need to increase starting salaries to hire new QUALIFIED recruits based on merit.  Pilots are a premium as well.  I knew at some point, the ex-air force pilot pool would dwindle, as fewer pilots are available.  They were the natural work force to hire to fly commercial aircraft - pre-trained, serious, regimented and civic minded.  Hiring someone to fly a twin turbine jumbo jet with only small prop plane experience and getting a waiver by taking an exam is silly.

good riddance to commercial flying.  The airlines deserve it with all their corporate greed and prioritizing profits over passengers.  Have you seen how they have reduced leg room and overall comfort for passengers?  And they brag about it and plan on reducing leg room even more.  I hope they get a recession they never recover from.

Stop flying, it's better for the environment and your health too.  And there isn't an industry that deserves to suffer more than the airline cartels.

Yeah no, I'll continue to fly because I don't like wasting vacation days driving to places I want to go.  If you can figure out a way to get me 100s and 1000s of miles in a few hours, I'll switch.

We need high speed trains here like most modern countries have.  Europe, Japan, etc, all have really high speeds on these trains.

MagLev technology.... it's going to be absolutely awesome when we finally have it.

yeah with all the traffic-the most I'm willing to drive is 4-5 hrs and even that is exhausting in traffic.

there was a proposal for one from NYC to BOS but space is an issue and the existing line has too many turns/curves
