October 2020 General Discussion

Recommended Posts

Significant snows running a little early this year. Records show for Duluth that, although snow is common, this amount is usually observed during the last week of the month.

Snowed here off and on since last night. All told we got around 4-5 inches...tho it's melted back down to around 2-3 on the ground. Took some of these while hiking before the second burst of snow came in. In the pic showing the clouds, you can see the lake effect snow moving in as I finished hiking. That dropped another 2 inches followed by an inch or so over the rest of the day today.

Its 2020. Plan on your highs in the teens for Halloween.

Careful where that 3.5 weeks of cold, snowy chances are placed. Don't want to use it all up in October.

Is fire chasing a viable thing to do? I'm thinking about doing it. Where can one view an active list of ongoing wildfires?

Viewing a wildfire from a safe distance (like tornadoes) will be an interesting and educational thing to witness. Personally, I’m only interested in watching wildfires if they are natural occurrences (lightning strikes). I have no interest in seeing a wildfire caused by Ed tossing his cigarette butt out his car window or Karen starting a wildfire during a gender reveal party.

That's what I'm confused about. It just dawned on me that the Red Flag Warning is basically a "don't set shit on fire" warning. Good point.

Snowing this a.m. with about 1/2" on the ground. Melting now and turning over to rain. 3-6" possible on the ridges where it tends to be colder than right near the lake where I am.

Filtered sun now and almost an immediate corresponding increase in winds.

Yea, it has been interesting to watch the fluctuations.

Winds increased earlier this morning, with gusts to 29KT. Then ceilings lowered and a few showers moved in, and winds died with only 10-15KT gusts. Since then with more sun, it’s not gusting to 39KT with some BLDU.

I think the term wildfire should be used only in the case of naturally occurring fires in nature. Idiot humans who accidentally or intentionally set fires in nature need a new, more appropriate term.

I must be challenged. I can't find any current spotter information on any NWS site, nor can I find anything on satellite. Thanks anyway homie
