Fear and loathing April, 2020 discussion, obs, and the occasional derailment

We lucked out today... high of 52F and only a few passing showers.  I guess that counts as "lucking out" given the weather in some other areas.  I was at least able to get out for an 8-mile walk to pass the time without getting wet.

Big orographic differences in precip with this one from east slope to west slope... only about 0.35" here but the other side of Smugglers Notch had 0.93" on the west slope with that low level NW flow under the NE mid-level flow, which usually leads to extremely blocked flow as winds aloft don't let the precip break over the crest.

I have almost 1.5” but the guy north of me has near 2” and he should have less then me. The fine drops and strong winds causing havoc. My Davis was doing fine until this morning. Big undercatch now.

You got a stratus to check against?

I should. Just a gauge I got a Lowe’s lol. My Davis I think needs calibration, but I don’t understand why it undercatches so much when it’s windy or heavy rain. I mean I expect some issues, but sometimes it’s 60% of what my other gauge gets. It was good until last night and then deviated night time.

You ever notice if wind direction matters?

I don’t know enough about automated rain gauges.

Interesting project though to figure out.

I think when it’s very windy from the NE, trees affect it. When it’s not windy and not too heavy I don’t see the discrepancy.

My experience is over collect large droplet heavy rains under collect fine mist windy days. But all in all within a tenth most times

Do you have the new cone to cut down on turbulence over the gauge?

thankfully that crapstorm is over and we can enjoy a decent weekend

Yup. Time to dry out and warm it up.

I don’t

I noticed some improvement with that design with the small droplet rains.

Looks like SI has just the cone in stock.

https://www.scaledinstruments.com/shop/davis-instruments/parts/vantage-pro2-parts/rain-cone-and-parts/davis-6462/

P/N 6461 is the cone without the logo on it. Same price.
